A beautiful collection of colour and B/W photos of women from Madagascar. The colour pictures are for me the best, as the warmth of the locations glows from the page. The book covers a range of ages, shapes and sizes, but all exude a natural beauty and confidence that seems very genuine. There is no pursuit of a fake 'perfection', just an open and honest portrayal (though I think tinged with a romantic and nostalgic feel)of ordinary women in beautiful locations, with the photographer expertly exposing the innate beauty these women possess. 4/5 as I would have preferred more colour, but a wonderful book.

In the mid nineties Swiss photographer Daniel Bauer traveled to the exotic island country of Madagascar, where he studied its people and worked on a series of portraits and nudes that eventually developed into a full fledged book published by Edition Reuss. Consisting of 96 pages with 81 black & white photographs Black Magic Women is an astounding introduction to the natural beauty of a people that the rest of world has not fully realized. Lovely young girls cascade naked across the pages obviously reveling in the attention. Sometimes they even appear overjoyed by the experience - this is so refreshing! And the setting of Madagascar serves as an incredible background to their nimble grace and extraordinary beauty. The German edition of Penthouse magazine called it, "..a unique insight into the erotic world of Madagascar.." and we concur that it represents a wholly original vision of a people that has hitherto been kept secret from the rest of the world.
Daniel Bauer resides in Basel, Switzerland where he runs his photography studio and publishing affairs. Hopefully, he is planning a sequel to this wonderful publication.
