After spending many an enjoyable time when younger playing the previous edition of this game I couldn't resist taking the chance to see how the years have treated. Time's been kind.

The basic idea is this: The wizard who ruled the land is dead, leaving his Crown of Command for whoever's the first to take it. Players take the role of one of a number of characters, such as Warrior, Priest, Wizard etc, and tries to get there. You travel around the Outer Region, having adventures and gaining loot and useful equipment, until you feel ready to have a crack at the (much more dangerous) Middle Region on your way to the (downright lethal) Inner Region and the crown.

The fun comes from the near-infinite variety of routes and adventures that can be taken to get there, plus the opportunity to beat up/mug/steal from your opponents' characters. Recommended as an alternative to the dull routine of Monopoly, etc.

I played the second edition about 15 years ago and loved it, then bought a copy of the third edition with dungeon expansion and have played this game with my son (who is now 16) and with my daugther (10) for many years, but I found the ending a little bit of a let down (It was all geared up for the tower expansion, very rare!). This fourth edition is a combination of the best elements of the secound and third edition, with a great ending, as all players fight until only one player is left alive. It has superb artwork, on a very big board, bigger than any of the others. We have just found out that the expansions from the third edition can be used, although not perfectly but still brings a bit more magic to the game for those who seek it. Hopefully, the makers of the game will bring out some expansions (I have heard this may not happen). This is a fantastic version of the classic game Talisman. WE LOVE IT!

makes a very quick come back! Having wanted to own this game since the 3rd edition (the plastic dragon grabbed my attention) but was denied by unknowing parents (not their fault, they thought I was going through a 'stage.') I am over the moon to say that I now own the beautifully crafted 4th ed.

Having never really played the game before (see above) I didn't know what to expect. But on a quiet day I decided to teach myself the rules... It took less than an hour to grasp the main rules of play. Having still waiting to play a proper game, I can say that the looong wait did not dissapoint. The rules are easy to follow and are in a large print format so therefore easy to read.

The board is beautifully designed. The characters and profile cards are easy to understand and so are the game cards. Suprisingly there aren't that many plastic parts that can be so common with cult games such as this. An added bonus.

It doesn't really have any educational value, but hay, who really cares? Just owning this game bought back so many memories of being a teen and into Games Workshop and fantasy as a whole. The memories were eductional enough for me!

Any gripes? Yes. A few! The character cards need to be looked after. Although they are quite sturdy, they can be prone to 'wear and tear.' The plastic pieces (life, craft, magic etc) can be fiddly to find the right one. The game cards are a bit on the small side and can be easily misread sometimes.

But on the whole, there isn't anything bad you can say about this game. I mean, come on, its been around since the early 80's. That's got to mean something? Its just a shame that Black Industries aren't running any more prints (they are being bought out) or add ons! But if you really want to add a bit of character it is quite possible to design your own characters and if you are into the Games Workshop scene (such as I am) then why not paint some miniatures to represent the card characters?

A great game that can be enjoyed by anyone. Now if only they could re-release Hero Quest...
