A Definite Grower 20 Aug 2003
By u123072
Format:Audio CD
After I listened to this and it's sister record - "Devil's Workshop" - I was a little disappointed as it didn't have the same impact on me as "Dog in the Sand". After a few listens it was relegated to the "rarely played" section of my CD pile. A couple of weeks ago I was searching for some CDs to listen to on my commute to work and I chose this. It has not been out of my CD player much since! A wonderful collection of rock/country/bluesy tunes recorded "as live" in Frank's modbile studio. A unique CD deserving to be a part of any collection.

Frank Black is carving a comfortable niche for himself as a country-inflected singer songwriter, and appears a world away from the Pixies on this album. His vocal delivery is somewhat mellower than usual, and there appears to be none of the barking or growling which is somewhat of a trademark of his on this album. However, instead of suggesting someone who is simply not trying any more, this hints toward him being more content; as he and the Catholics lay into this collection of songs, it becomes apparent that this in fact the case.

This is a highly accomplished album, played masterfully and enlivened with beautful pedal steel guitar, and as this was recorded live to 2 track it shows a band with real connection, who are also incredibly tight. Some of the guitar work hints at a Joey Santiago-style lack of concern over time signatures, and this is another highlight of the album. Anything recorded by this colossus of music is going to be musically interesting, and this is no different here as he gives country the full Frank Black treatment.

This is an excellent album from a modern legend, and one ideal for those wishing to take a roadtrip around America from the comfort of their arm chair.

This album, as one of the other reviews mentioned, is a definite grower. I thought it was a bit dull when I listened to it first but after a few listens the songs really began to reveal themselves. It's now probably my favorite Frank Black album. I don't think there's any "dogs" on it at all, which is a great achievement considering that it has 18 (!) tracks and was released the same day as Devil's Workshop (another great Frank Black album). If you're looking to get some solo Frank Black, this is a good place to start.
