Product Description

Product Description
The fifth-anniversary edition of the best-selling work on the development of racial identity. . Walk into any racially mixed high school and you will see black youth seated together in the cafeteria. Of course, it's not just the black kids sitting together-the white, Latino, Asian Pacific, and, in some regions, American Indian youth are clustered in their own groups, too. The same phenomenon can be observed in college dining halls, faculty lounges, and corporate cafeterias. What is going on here? Is this self-segregation a problem we should try to fix, or a coping strategy we should support? How can we get past our reluctance to talk about racial issues to even discuss it? And what about all the other questions we and our children have about race? Beverly Daniel Tatum, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism, asserts that we do not know how to talk about our racial differences: Whites are afraid of using the wrong words and being perceived as "racist" while parents of color are afraid of exposing their children to painful racial realities too soon. Using real-life examples and the latest research, Tatum presents strong evidence that straight talk about our racial identities-whatever they may be-is essential if we are serious about facilitating communication across racial and ethnic divides. We have waited far too long to begin our conversations about race. This remarkable book, infused with great wisdom and humanity, has already helped hundreds of thousands of readers figure out where to start.

About the Author
Beverly Daniel Tatum is president of Spelman College and former professor of psychology and dean of Mount Holyoke College. An acknowledged expert on race relations in the classroom and the development of racial identity, Dr. Tatum participated in President Clinton's "Dialogue on Race" and lectures extensively throughout the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read, learn and love, 23 Aug 2003
By Carlotta (London, England) - See all my reviews
I found this book to be brilliant, well written and relevant to me as a black woman growing up in Britain. Obviously written from and for the American experience it touched on things I have felt and put into words things I wasn't able to express and episodes which had happened in my life. It gave me insight into the lives of Puerto Ricans, American Indians etc as the racial groupings in Britain are slightly different. I think anyone who is interested in different cultures and in their own and who are interested in a just society should read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book really opened my eyes., 18 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I am a college student majoring in education. I read this book for a class on racism. This book really opened my eyes to the needs of multi-racial students. I realize that not all students are the same and teaching them the same will not benifit all of my students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A practical guide to the day to day psychology of race., 16 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Although Tatum writes from a psychological perspective she does not dwell on theory. She provides practical advice and real world examples, often from her own family's experience, of how the race system works in America, how to teach your kids about race and how deal with racism within yourself. Her explanations and examples of white racism were both varied and accurate. Whites will find this book helpful in understanding their own prejudices and privileges. Blacks will find practical advice on dealing with racial issues and an explanation of white behavior.
