The Black Jazz label consistently turned out deep, independent jazz during the early 70's with top musicians and vocalists like Doug Carn, Gene Russell and Kellee Paterson . The originals are hard to come by and cost an arm and a leg, but represses began to pop up a few years ago. Last year Gilles Peterson put together his pick of the back catalogue, on a compilation that's well worth digging out. It's Theo Parish's turn with this album, and he finds more spiritual jazz that demands concentration and rewards with a deep sense of satisfaction and focus. Not a disco re-edit, but equally as sound to get as lost and immersed in as if you were out on floor.

It's smooth and challenging at the same time. At times it reminds of Coltrane's later period, before it quickly turns into groovy zappaesque jazz.

I bought this because I am a serious fan of Theo's disco re-edits and because I am also a big fan jazz funk and fusion and I love straight jazz too. This is a collection of really leftfield, free form jazz that is not only undanceable but also poorly recorded. A good lesson in why not to buy impulsively.
