For those that don't know Adam Franklin, he's a great songwriter and guitarist in the indie/shoegazer vein although he pushes those boundaries quite a bit.

Both as the mainman in Swervedriveer, through his solo project Toshack Highway, and now under his own name, he's been highly prolific and continually produced great music throught.

As far as this album goes, though, I wouldn't say it was as good as some of his other solo albums.

He's got the right to release what he likes, and from interviews I've seen, he's clearly gone for a film soundtrack feel on this album which certainly comes across.

The production is clear, though I'm not overly keen on the treatment on his vocals at times, but the main downside for me is that, true to a film score, he repeats the same general theme in several songs.

Add to that the two cover versions of his own tracks (A Long Way Home and Shining Somewhere) and there's something of a dearth of new material here.

He often covers his own tracks brilliantly but in this case I don't think either cover is up to the original versions.

In all honesty there's only four tracks on this album - Asha, Boocat Leah, Coda Code and Passenger Train - that I'd say were on a par with most of the rest of his stuff, and to my ears i can't help thinking that it might have been better as an ep.

I feel bad writing this but it's just not an album that's grabbed me.

I'd recommend that someone coming to Adam Franklin for the first time instead bought 'Bolts of Melody', followed very closely by 'I could sleep for a thousand years' and 'Spent Bullets'.

Not his best 10 May 2014
By Martyn - Published on Amazon.com

As an Adam Franklin fan I don't regret buying it but would recommend another album to those who've not heard much of his stuff before.

I've got everything Adam Franklin ad dSwervedriver have released and to my ears, and unlike others here, i wouldn't say it was his best yet or even as good as some of his other solo albums.

I still think he's one of the best musicians and songwriters around, and he's got the right to release what he likes, but I'd hate him to be judged on this effort alone.

From interviews i've seen, he's clearly gone for a film soundtrack feel on this album which certainly comes across.

Stunning 4 Sept. 2013
By L. Atkinson - Published on Amazon.com
You don't have to have been a fan of Swervedriver, to appreciate Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody. While I have liked his previous stuff quite a bit, I have to say, Black Horses is just stunning. Fully formed, it transports you to another place while listening. You experience this. You don't just hear it, which I appreciate so much. On heavy rotation on my Mp3.

His best yet 13 Jan. 2014

Stunning is a good word- I would add lush, thrilling and accomplished. Adam Franklin (of the great 90s English guitar group Swervedriver) brings all his impressive musicianship and song-craft together in an album that explores an ever-expanding world of sound and melody in a too-short amount of time. Its about 40 minutes of shifting, challenging yet hypnotic music that engages film (John Barry, Morricone) along with the powerful guitar sound that first made him known, and seems to incorporate everything he has learned along the way. There's no down-time or excess: his vocals are as smoothly calming as ever and you'll want to keep replaying it to get the most out of the complexities of his lyrics and compositions.

Very happy with my overall purchase. It came exactly as described and in a quick fashionable timing.
