Nina Simone was born Eunice Wayman on February 21st 1933, in Tryon, South Carolina. She is, for many, the ultimate jazz/blues diva. Few know however, that Ms. Simone holds a doctorate in music, yet was once refused admission to the legendary Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, an event that has forever marked her life. An intense live performer, Nina Simone's shows are legendary, ... Read more in Amazon's Nina Simone Store

4.0 out of 5 stars A full range of Nina Simone's talent 11 July 2007
Format:Audio CD
Three live Nina Simone albums on one package. 'Emergency Ward' (1972) starts with a stomping long version of 'My Sweet Lord' with the Krishna bits taken out, transforming into 'Today is A Killer' ,a virtual prayer which took up one side of the original LP. Two more reflective tracks follow . It's great but more for the fans, maybe not the most immediate start to anyone exploring Nina's work. On to 'It is Finished' ( 1974) and what an absolute gem, 11 superb but diverse tracks. Nina at her toughest -she covers 'The Pusher', a Steppenwolf song against 'hard' drugs. Nina didn't take prisoners when she got going and track nine 'Dambala' is astonishing, one of the most haunting songs ever. Nina plays piano slowly, with little accompaniment and harnesses but controls all her rage in a melodic song cursing slave traders, highlighting some incredible vocals. But this album also displays Nina at her most charming, 'I want a little sugar in my bowl' and 'Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter's are delightful. There is the glorious soul ballad 'Let It be Me', and the African inspired 'Obeah Woman' amongst this release, Nina Simone's farewell album to the USA as she began years of travel. Finally on to 'Black Gold' (1969). More time bound than 'It is finished'- but worthy nevertheless- and out of this trio the one that feels the most 'live'. Seven tracks, starting with two tender but different versions of the 1960's standard 'Black is the Gold Of My True Love's Hair' - displaying the merging of Soul and Folk that Roberta Flack would make a few famous years later. 'Ain't Got No/ Got Life' from the 1966 musical 'Hair' is fine. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars At last the best live albums on the planet 17 May 2002
By David Spanswick VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I have waited too long to hear "Emergency Ward" again. I moved all the vinyl out many years ago and have waited patiently for the release of certain albums to turn up on CD and here in one package are, arguably, the best live albums ever produced. Emergency Ward with its three tracks always humbled me with its magnificence. Nina singing My Sweet Lord is an experience anyone with the vestige of a soul must listen to and her rendering of Isn't It a Pity leaves me bereft of words of praise. But wait that is not all. On this double CD you also get the later live album It Is Finished as well as, for me, the best album of all three Black Gold whose tracks including Westwind and Who Knows Where The Time Goes are worth the budget price asked for. Do yourself a favour and buy this tomorrow. Listen to how these songs were designed to be sung.

5.0 out of 5 stars An impossible album to do justice 1 Dec 2004
Format:Audio CD
There is no way that any review can do justice to what is captured within this double album. I would simply emplore you (as I do my friends)to shut up, sit down, and just listen to this woman.
I got this album on Christmas morning. It was the first of the CDs that I received, that I put on, and I didn't move until it was finished. I sat and shivered in my pyjamas for the length of the whole album. Never have I been so amazed by a live album. Never have I been so envious of the audience that was actually there for the recording.
If ever there really was, earth-moving, soul-stirring stuff, then this is it. It is an out-pouring of 30 years of pain, anger, suppression, damage and resilience. The full brunt of Nina's harsh life are brought to bear here, she spits and hollers it at you, you feel her pain, and of those around her. There simply is nowhere to hide from her fervent admonitions, her knowing recriminations, or heartbreaking pleas.
The opening song 'My Sweet Lord', is nothing short of amazing, and is worth the price alone. One must remind yourself that this is a live performance every once in a while. It is the High Priestess in full swing, operating on a higher plane as she desperately complains about the speed of Divine revelation. No one, bar Nina, could carry this off as she does here. It is a masterclass, in genuine soul, grit, determination and purpose. It showcases an ability that could not be learned in a fame school, or television programme, but that is articulated somwehere deep inside of her, and is then served up in the most bittersweet key of life.
There are no bad songs here. There are a lot of very good songs, and some stand-outs, in particular, Isn't It A Pity, Com' By H'Yere-Good Lord, Dambala, Obeah Woman and Who Knows Where The Time Goes.

If you are buying this cd as I did to get Nina's wonderful version live version of Sandy Denny's "who knows where the time goes" as featured in the soundtrack of the movie "The Dancer Upstairs" ( starring Javier Bardem) and in the soundtrack features a lovely spoken monologue intro by nina. That same live version is on this cd , complete with the monologue / intro .

It is worth buying for that track alone
The rest of the tracks on this 2 x cd set are great also
This set combines 3 of her classic Live lps in their entirety and is Essential Nina

You won't be dissapointed
