This book had me hooked from the start. I had never read a Donald Goines book before but I intend to read all of them now.

From the start of the book I felt for the female character and then when she found love I felt it to and when there was anger I felt that too.

Donald writes for REAL, he captures love, anger, pain and most of all reality.

I was determined to read this book after I saw it on a couple listmania lists and heard the story about Hip Hop artist Nas writing his song 'Black girl Lost' after reading this story but to be honest I was left a little disappointed!
The book did start off well. It tells the story of Sandra whose life on the streets starts at the tender age of 8. She steals and sells drug in order to eat as her mother is an alcholic and is not concerned with mothering her young child.
The character of Chink is later introduced and he becomes Sandra's boyfriend and then the story tells the highs and lows of their life and relationship.

After hearing about the book I anticipated it to be much better. It still makes for a good read and does have some 'can't put down' moments.

I heard about Donald Goines through the rapper Nas. I am a big fan of his work and he has a song entitle Black Girl Lost on his It Was Written album. When Nas said in an interview that he got this idea for the song from this book I just had to read it. The book made me cry in public without stopping because it felt so real. I felt like I was able to identify with all the characters in the book. The story line felt like things I see everyday. I like a book that I can relate to, and for every scene of this book I felt like I opened a chapter of my life. Excellent work of literature.

I had always known of Donald Goines and his books but had never read any of them and after reading Black Girl Lost I am ashamed it took me so long to start reading his books. One thing I like about the way Donald Goines wrote this book is that you feel he is telling you a story about what he saw and knew where with some books you are just reading a story. I love that era so the 70's language and dialect made the book even more interesting to me. An interesting story, well written, easy to follow and I finished it quickly. I will be buying more Donald Goines books after this.

I had skipped past Donald Goines name on a number of occasions but I am so glad that I gave this book a chance. From the moment I picked up the book, I did not drop it once. I could visualize the surroundings of this story, it was unbelievable. From the first 2 pages, I actually flicked through a couple of pages just to see what else would happen because the thought having to read all the other pages before getting just towards the middle was intense and I wasn't prepared to wait that long. Suspense was present throughout the story, it never failed to impress me. This story captured so much of my emotions especially anger and happiness. I really appreciate this story in more ways than I can imagine and I respect Donald Goines in a great way (and this is based off of this ONE book) I am definitely looking forward to reading more of his books in the future. Simply Amazing
