Without a doubt the most moving album the Junkies have made. "Murder tonight in the trailer park" is haunting beyond words and has probably become an anthem in the serial killer community. "Horse in the country" is simply beautiful. "Winter's Song"... I could go on all night. If you are new to the Junkies, this is the place to start. Follow this with "Caution Horses" and "The Trinity Session", and you'll be well on your way to becoming a Margo junkie. Her voice is simply extraordinary, totally angelic.

Listening to it today, it still sounds as fresh and inspiring as it did when I first heard it over ten years ago. Michael Timmins' writing and instrumental skills, coupled with the wonderfully atmospheric voice of his sister, Margo, combine to stop you in the middle of whatever you're doing, just to listen and luxuriate in their spell-binding music.

I'm not a huge fan of country music, and I'm not sure I would consider the Junkies to be "country" as such - it's a big influence, to be sure, but like all good musicians, they transcend genres and create their own.

This still remains one of their all-time best albums, along with the Trinity Sessions...stand-out tracks for me are A Horse in the Country: guaranteed to have me tapping my foot and oblivious to anything else; Oregon Hill and Southern Rain feel like the sound-track to something Tarantino, and the Townes Van Zandt tribute trio, Cowboy Junkies' Lament, Townes Blues and especially Live to Fly are worth the price of the album alone.

If you like rich, acoustic atmosphere and intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics then you could do a lot worse than this wonderful album.

I'd heard of the cowboy Junkies, but I'd never really heard them. After watching Oliver Stone's "Natural born Killers", I fell in love with the song, "If I were the woman and I was the man". So I thought I'd give the cowboy junkies a try, I listened to the above mentioned track about forty times before I listened to the rest of the album. I find the album in general to be at best mediocre, Timmins' lyrics are good, but the music is lacking so it does'nt make you want to keep playing the cd too often, however it's pleasant enough, but really in my opinion it's only saving grace is the track "If I were the woman and I was the man". But, then again what do I know.
