Black Dog, Dream Dog is a wonderful book. I was hooked in the first chapter. This book is about young
girl, Sam, a stray dog, Horaito, and an old lady, Mrs. Sylvan, who just had a stroke and is placed in an
assisted living facility. Sam and Horaito have a unique bond that only the two of them can understand.
Sam knows that Horaito was placed in her life for a reason.
Sam is a young girl who loves dogs. She has a great personality of a middle schooler and is very stubborn
when it comes to listening to her controlling mother. She finds Horaito and believes he is a magical dog,
but she has to hide him from her mother. Soon, Sam realizes that she needs to find Horaito's owner and
return him even though she really wants to keep him.
Sam's mom has arranged for Sam to go with her on Saturdays to a local nursing home and visit with
the residents. Sam does not want go, but after the first visit she finds that it is something she enjoys.
Sam and her mom bring their small dog with them to visit the residents. Sam decides this would be the
perfect job for Horaito.
Mrs. Sylvan recently had a stroke and is paralyzed and can no longer speak anymore. Mrs. Sylvan wakes
up in a nursing home missing her dog but she does not know how to ask anyone. She is trying to learn
how to form words again so she can ask somewhere about her dog, Little Bear.
The chapters alternate between the adventurous stories of Mrs. Sylvan and Sam. These two stories
begin very differently but leave the reader wanting to learn more. Ultimately the story evolves into a
wonderful story of values and a shared love for a big black dog.
