Emanating out of Angola, Buraka Som Sistema's Black Diamond represents a unique blend of dark phat basslines, hard synthesised beats and African and latin percussion with techno and house references thrown in. It adds up to a listening experience that is occasionally challenging but extremely rewarding if you happen to be a world music technophile.

Black Diamond is undoubtedly ghettotech in origin - dance music evolved from advent of cheap electronic synthesisers and samplers reaching disenfranchised masses - as in the recent transformation by favela soundsystems of Brazilian funk, with which this shares much in common. The end result is akin to a speeded up form of dubstep enlived with percussion, portuguese rapping and vocals, and excellent use of dirty synth lines/samples, culminating in some awesome tracks: Acqui Para Voces and Yah would enhance any DJ set regardless of the country.

Definitely not for traditionalists or the faint hearted. If you're inclined towards a bit of musical adventure and are curious about the sound of now in Luanda, be prepared to have any preconceptions of African music solely comprising of talking drums and lilting guitars firmly blown out of the water. Heartily recommended.
