I bought this workbench a year ago. It does not deserve even one star.
There is a plastic (yes plastic) well, i can only call it a ribbon running between the two winding handles...so you only have two use one hand when shutting the jaws. This flimsy feature is next to useless as it allows no clamping pressure to be applied, if you attempt this the winding handle will just keep turning and the ribbon will simply skip over the cogs to which it is attached. not to worry though because soon the ribbon snaps...after all there is only so much light duty work it can handle.
The runners which attach the two poor quality boards or jaws to the top of the unit are loosly bolted to the wormscrews using a, you guessed it, plastic, sleeve, so if you tighten the unit up too much (in reality this is very little, barely enough to hold a small block of wood in place) the two jaws begin to raise up away from the frame, in a tectonic plate fashion.. at which point some part of the plastic sleeve holding the jaws to the wormscrew will break irreparably.

Do yourself a BIG favour and buy a Wolfcraft bench, they're manufactured in Germany and are bulletproof

I must be using this thing wrong. I've had this thing for what feels like ages. I bought it because it looked really useful. I thought it would clamp and hold things in place while I cut them, planed them, sanded them and turned rough old bits of wood into beautifully crafted items. It doesn't. For starters, it's too light so if you put a bit of wood in it and plane it, the workmate will move whizz across the floor. Ah, but there's a step to stand on which would weigh it down. Yeah, but then you're too close and unable to do end to end work on anything so you have to ask someone to stand on the step while you work and they can't do this without commenting on what you're doing, which, given that you're probably using sharp tools, could potentially put you in prison unless you have the patience of the Dalai Llama. Also, the clamping action is so weak that the wood keeps coming out.

The real reason I hate this thing so much though is that when it comes to moving it, it's horrible. Mostly, for moving it a few feet round the workshop, its own feet stick out too much and trip you up. You can, however, fold them in. If you ever decide to do this and the product is more than 3 minutes old, put some welding gloves on first. The metal's cheap, sharp and will rust a bit and seize up quite quickly unless you have a centrally heated, draught free workshop (if you do, get your butler to use this). There are springs on the legs that threaten to snap them back and take your fingers off. I've found the best thing to do is pick it up, tilt it onto one leg and, having checked that all limbs are out of the way, push until the leg collapses. Now, the only time I've had to do this is when collapsing the whole unit. I've had to do this twice when moving house.

I recently bought one of these to go with an old 800 Workmate so I could hold boards and long bits of timber whilst cutting. What Black & Decker don't say is that the 536 is not only a cheapened version of the 825 but that it is not the same height or width as the normal workmate so it cannot be used together. It does not have any of the markings on the top and the lock mechanism is dud. Basically, it is a eunuch! Avoid like the plague and buy the 800 series.

Useless rubbish, flimsy, not fit for purpose, please do not buy it. 73% of buyers went on to buy the more expensive B/DWM825 which is nearly as bad. Black & Decker do not deserve to remain in business selling trash like this.

I had the misfortune to inherit one of these WM536 Workmates from my mother-in -law while clearing her house recently . I suspect it was some act of malice on her part .....!!! Years ago I had one of the original cast alloy Workmates which was ok but no real substitute for a 'proper' workbench . Whatever its shortcomings ,however , it at least had the advantage of being well-made and unlikely to bite you while being used .......!!!! By comparision the WM536 is poorly made from a collection of sheet metal pressings that have had none of their razor sharp edges removed . The sprung-loaded legs are a pain to operate and the whole thing is a nightmare to erect for use or fold up for storage without the risk of injury . In use it has precious little clamping ability and exhibits no stability should you be unwise enough to attempt to plane or saw timber using this piece of junk for support . As I didn't have the misfortune to pay good money for this piece of rubbish from Black and Decker , mine will be going in a skip ; I wouldn't it recommend to anyone .

Bought one of these for a friend in whose house I was working. He had a Wickes branded copy which was/is so poorly made that when the jaws are screwed against the item to be worked on that the jaws both flex in their mountings and actually force the item away from the face of the jaws. Difficult to describe but once seen never forgotton. The Wickes bit of kit is OK as a saw horse or a hop-up - and not much else.
As I was working at this site for a while I got a B+D in as I have one at home and know they work well and almost forever!
