Ineffective,

This review is from: Black & Decker Thermo Electric Travel Cooler - 12V (Automotive)
I wanted to keep items for travel cool and cool bought items en route. Occupies a huge amount of space in the car and barely keeps "already cold" items chilled. It certainly will not cool items bought at room temperature. It says as much in the detailed manual, but that's not made sufficiently clear in the advertising blurb. The two chilled cup holders are virtually useless as the chilled base area is very small. Claims that it can make ice in the insulated container may be true, but certainly not in external ambient tempaeratures of 28C. The amounts of ice would be minimal, in any event.

Perfect for a voyage cooler,

I like this cooler a lot! On the outside it looks very good and durable, made of solid plastic. The top cover is soft and covered in black vinyl, so it can be used as an armrest if placed in the middle of the back seat. The accessory pouch can be found on one side only (as shown in the picture). When not in use, the power cord may be stored inside its dedicated compartment. The only control available is the power switch, there are no temperature adjusters. The power switch has 3 options: OFF (in the middle); COOL (on one side); WARM (the opposite side). There is a fan that is working while in use (very silent). As far as functionality, I found only two downsides! The first one is that the cup holders ARE NOT in the thermal circuit! They are not cooled nor warmed up by the unit, they are just two cup holders! The inside of the unit is divided in two regions. At the bottom is the freezer, made out of freezer specific aluminum and finish. The freezer is about 1/3 of total volume. In the package is a covered aluminum ice tray, but you are not limited in using only that one the make ice. There is also an insulator pad to cover the freezer so it will cool much more quickly. The remaining 2/3 is a simple plastic wall to hold the goods. It won't be much cooling in that area when using the insulator pad! That's the second downside! I've got the chance to use this item as a cooler only. At the bottom I've placed 4 bottles of water of 0,5l each on a 2x2 basis. The water temperature is hard to change so it is better to place them there. They were at the inside car temperature (over 30 C degrees) and in 30 minutes were cooled enough to be good to drink. Over these bottles I've placed food boxes with sandwiches, cheese and vegetables. They were all kept at a cooled temperature even in broad summer daylight. I haven't used the AC and the cooler was placed on the backseat with no one sitting next to it, so the only airflow was the one created by its own fan. As an overall, I like this box a lot. I gave 4 stars only because of those 2 downsides! If you are not looking for an ice cold cool box, then this one is perfect!

Great for picnics or driving on hot days when you need a cool drink. Add ice to your Pimm's or keep the Cola cold. Alternatively, keep your take-away hot on the trip back home. It's a great piece of kit!
