This powerful 18 Volt Black & Decker HP188F4BK has been fitted with a faster motor for more efficient drilling, and a new ratchet mechanism (from 11 to 15 teeth) which allows the drill to give more beats per minute for faster hammer drilling. It has a hammer action and 2nd mechanical speed for drilling into masonry and a variable speed switch for gentle start for the user to obtain full control, and a reverse switch for added versatility.
Black & Decker HP188F4BK also has 2 mechanical speeds, for high torque driving and drilling into steel and high speed drilling into other materials. It also has hammer action and an electronic brake that ensures the user of safety and prevents over tightening of screws. The HP188F4BK has an easy and quick change of the 1.7ah Ni-Cad battery due to a new battery locking system. Like most Black & Decker machines, anti-slip soft grip casings have been used for more comfort for the user.

Have had several cordless drills but this is by far the best,plenty of power when needed(masonary)

Needed a good / powerful drill - it comes with 2 higher capacity batteries (some of the other B&D 18v packs are 1.5ah or less - these are 1.7ah), a quick charger and plastic storage case.
The charger probably takes ~2 hours to charge the batteries but seems to be a 'smart' charger so even if the battery pack was half used you can put it back on the charger to recharge. It has a light that goes from red (charging) to green (charged) whereas some of the other B&D products that take these batteries have a slow (8 hour) charger that has no 'charged' indicator.
Price on Amazon was better than B&Q even though they were claiming it was on offer with about £30-40 off - ended up buying one for my dad as well!

I purchased this drill together with the Black & Decker GKC1000P Alligator Lopper 18v (includes 1 x 18 Volt battery) purely in order to obtain a smart battery charger and an extra two batteries for the lopper.
However, my husband was quite surprised at just how good this drill was, especially since after his last experience with a cordless drill, he did not think he would ever use one again. His first project was building two large tool cabinets out of superwood and this drill did the entire job no problem. We also found it amazingly handy when putting up lights in the yard, or even putting our house numbers up outside.
The only downside that we found was that whilst this drill is brilliant at wood, metal and good with cement, it does not handle hard brick very well. If you need to drill into brick directly, you will have to get something corded to do the job - The only reason that this super tool earned 4 instead of 5 stars.
The attached video shows a short clip of some easy wood drilling, followed by the putting up of a hose reel, the first hole that gets drilled happened to be straight into hard brick and it is quite evident that it was not going to make it. However, the subsequent holes which were drilled into cement and softer brick were handled just fine.
Overall, I would still highly recommend this drill and would definitely buy it again given the option.
