Lithium Ion Batteries

Black & Decker use some of the best grade Lithium Ion batteries within the DIY market. Each battery is tested for moisture ingress to ensure there is no chance of them short circuiting, as well as going through drop and vibration tests to ensure their durability. Contained within the battery pack are electronics that protect the battery against overcharging, as well preventing the battery from self discharging if it gets too hot or very cold. Black & Decker Lithium Ion batteries are designed to be ready to use when you are as there is no self discharge, they are also very light to ensure that you don‟t tire whilst completing that DIY Task.

Smaller and lighter

Smaller/Lighter -- Lithium Ion batteries have a higher energy density than NiCD / NIMH batteries. This means that equivalent capacity Lithium Ion batteries are smaller and lighter than conventional NiCD / NIMH batteries. So whether you are choosing cordless garden tools, power tools or cordless home cleaning our Lithium Ion batteries will guarantee that your tool is lighter and more compact ensuring there is less chance you will suffer from fatigue.

Slow discharge

Slow Discharge -- Lithium batteries have a very slow discharge rate compared to NiCD/Nimh batteries. After 90 days without use, a Lithium Ion battery will still retain up to 80% of its charge. This ensures that you will always be ready to complete that DIY task without having to wait for the battery to charge.

No memory effect

No Memory Effect -- When using NiCD/Nimh batteries it is recommended to fully discharge the battery prior to recharging them, otherwise the battery suffers from “memory effect” whereby it thinks it is fully charged when it isn’t. Lithium Ion batteries do not suffer from this, therefore can be recharged at any state of charge without the battery suffering from “memory effect”.

Cold temperature

Cold Temperature -- Nimh batteries will not work at temperatures approaching freezing. Black and Decker Lithium Ion batteries will work at these temperatures ensuring that you are able to get the “job” done.

Environmental -- Lithium Ion batteries contain metal elements that are not as harmful to the environment compared to other battery technology. All Lithium Ion batteries can be recycled at your local recycling centre.

I completed a small job yesterday with this. It involved fitting a small aerial in our loft. Drilling into the wood to fit the aerial was easy. In our bedroom, because of the design, I also had to drill a small hole through the plaster ceiling in a built-in wardrobe, again no problem. However, the route into this wardrobe required a hole through a double skinned wall, both skins being brick.

The drill coped admirably with this hole, cutting through the bricks with little effort. I had to use first a standard bit and then switched to an extra long one to complete the task. My reasoning was that the short bit would be easier to control. For this job, I would normally have used a heavy duty mains drill from B&Q.

I also used a hole drill to make a hole in a header tank lid.

The drill is very light and small, far more suited to restricted access jobs than either my mains drill or than the Black and Decker cordless drill that this one is replacing, which was never very powerful and also had no hammer action.

A fair amount of sparks emerge from the rear of the drill. Do not use it where there is a fire hazard!

There is a plastic case to house the drill and its small charger. Due to its design, it is all too easy to trap the power cord in it, so it will not close. A double headed screwdriver attachment is supplied and is housed as usual on the drill body. Surprisingly, no drill bits are supplied, which is a first for me. I have the B&D set already so that was not a problem, but bear that in mind if you don't.

There are two speed settings. I was puzzled at first by the hammer drill selection, until I realized it was single torque, selected on the torque wheel.

I've had two 18V Black & Decker drills in the past, and their weakness has been the annoyingly early failure rate of Ni-Cad batteries and chargers. The arrival of the rechargeable Lithium Ion battery version is very welcome. I can take the drill out of its case after weeks of non-use, and it functions immediately, whereas a Ni-Cad battery would be utterly flat.

I tend to buy Bosch by choice. I've always found the quality to be just that bit better than Black and Decker, so worth paying the extra. My existing Bosch cordless is similar in specification to this B&D, but after years of use around the house, the batteries were starting to show signs of age. I was particularly interested in this unit as it included a hammer drill function, which my Bosch didn't have. So, after a few weeks of work I'm broadly satisfied. It doesn't have quite the feel of quality that the Bosch does, but the return on that is a lighter unit. At 18v, it suffers from a limited amount of power, and there are some jobs that it just can't handle. In those cases you either have to purchase a professional quality drill or use a mains power device. Of course it's using the hammer action to drill into stone and brick where you need that power, and that is the unit's shortcoming. In this respect, unless you're drilling into mortar, the hammer action is perhaps a little superfluous as it's not particularly effective. But all that said, it's perfectly good for most jobs and ideal for the typical DIY enthusiast.

There is a lot going for this as long as you are not looking for a drill that is suitable for trade use. It is well balanced which is nice as some of the drills with batteries on the bottom of the handle seem to have got the balance all wrong. I hope the battery does last as long as it is claimed in the idle state as I don't know what has happened to batteries recently I got a Hitachi drill in early 1990s which held its charge for ages since then every drill I have used seems to need charging before use. I will update this review when I have used the drill for a few months. Charging takes quite a while 3 to 5 hours from flat although it does state that it can be left on charge all the time, so it is always ready.
It has two speeds and hammer and standard drilling with 11 torque settings for mainly screwdriver use. I tried drilling and using the screwdriver (it comes with a double ended bit) to repair a fence which had blown down, for this it worked well on the wood (probably pine but a soft wood) however it struggled in hammer mode in brickwork using an 8mm bit (the chuck capacity is a maximum of 10mm). I also liked the fact that the speed was also controlled by the amount the trigger was pressed, this is useful to start a hole and it prevents the drill from "skating" over the surface so I could drill in the correct place. The keyless chuck was easy to uses and held the drill bits securely. I could see considerable sparking, on start-up, through the vents at the rear of the drill and wondered if this would cause radio / TV interference but it did not.

Coming in a useful plastic carrying case this is a good all round drill which could do with a bit more power. It has a Max torque of 17/38 Nm (whatever that means) if you want to compare the power with other drills.

I bought this to replace an old, B&D 12v drill that I bought years ago, I also have a 240v B&D Hammer Drill and have been really pleased with both..
After extensive research and reading loads of reviews, both on here and other sites, I decided to go for this model as it seemed to do everything that the more expensive, "heavy duty" units could do, with the same power and torque, but at a fraction of the cost.. this was the best value for money drill I could find and I looked at them all!!
It has way more than enough torque and the variable speed makes it very controllable. On our first "outing" I tried screwing a screw, directly into a railway sleeper that my old 12v had given up on after about 3mm, this went at the job with all guns blazing and the kick back actually sprained my wrist.. it seems the unit could quite easily process the task in hand, but I needed both hands to hold on to it!!
I've used it, mainly as a screw driver, until yesterday when I had cause to put up some shelves in our downstairs loo, the walls, of which are made of granite, with a 1" layer of rendered concrete over it, so I selected "hammer" and in I went... I have to say that it tackled the job far better than I'd expected and in half the time it took the 240v drill, on full hammer to drill into the same wall, earlier in the year!
My Main reason for buying this unit is a strange one, I recently bought a poultry plucking machine that is powered by a drill, the old 12v had enough torque but the battery drained in seconds under such load, then the 240v drill had the speed, too much in fact but not enough torque, so I tried this one and it's amazing, sits at just the right speed and, even plucking a large, male Muscovy duck, it doesn't struggle at all!
