Product Description
In January 1944, four people hold the fate of the world in their hands. They are not statesmen or generals, but an American doctor, a German nurse, a Zionist killer, and a young Jewish widow. These four are brought together in a place almost beyond imagination: a small SS-run concentration camp harbouring a weapon so lethal that it could wipe out an entire D-Day invasion force. What they are forced to do in the name of victory – and survival – shows with terrible clarity that in a world where all is at stake, war can have no rules . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Great research and imagination puts this book among the best, 7 May 2000
By A Customer
I have read this book 5 times and it still manages to take my breath away. The way Greg takes fiction and combines it with true facts is outstanding and makes it a marker for any young aspiring author in this field. I have visited the place where the book is set and this just adds to the imagination and completes the way the book is supposed to be written. All round a great insight into the second world war and should be read and enjoyed by all.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling pace but filled with cliches, 13 Sep 2004
By Elizabeth Taylor "Barsine" (France) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I bought this book as I had read and enjoyed Deep Sleep by the same author which is an excellent thriller, unfortunately, this was not a wise choice as I was very disappointed by this novel. The basic story set in the Second World War follows a covert operation to prevent the use of chemical weapons which are being tested by the Nazis in a concentration camp. The pace of the writing is really excellent and Mr. Iles certainly knows how to keep a reader interested by slowly allowing facts to surface, however, and it's a big however everything about the military operation was a complete cliché so in the end it turned into a comic farce. First of all there are the main characters, the Israeli terrorist (an expendable resource to the English) and the American cerebral scientist with principles (who only fights because he hears of his brothers death) who of course find common macho cause. The training camp and the boys own getting tough exercises, the flying into enemy territory and meeting the love interest, the fact that within 5 minutes of meeting the contact the boys have spilled the beans of the entire operation including their meeting with Churchill (hmm I'm sure he met all the covert operatives in WWII The concentration camp where the inmates are kept healthy for experimental purposes (or maybe perhaps because the truth of these horrendous places would simply be beyond the writer to describe). The fact that despite all the odds the boys overcome everything in their path. To be honest I read through cliché after cliché because the writing style does keep ones interest and because I was on holiday with limited reading material, otherwise, I would have stopped at page 50. If you like war stories where the good guys always win and the enemy are as obvious as Blowfelt in a Bond movie then this is for you otherwise steer clear and buy one of the authors thrillers instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put this down, 3 Feb 2003
By D. J. Burton (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this as a holiday book, and it ruined the first few days of my holiday because I could not put it down! It's action-packed and after the first few pages it gets the reader so involved because of it's absorbing and detailed writing style. Anyone wanting a feel good action book should buy this.
