Biography

Black Country Communion is the brainchild of producer Kevin Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin). The album, produced and mixed by Shirley, is mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig.

Black Country Communion initially came to fruition when Kevin Shirley saw Glenn Hughes and Joe Bonamassa join forces on stage in Los Angeles in November 2009 for an explosive performance at Guitar Center’s… Read more in Amazon's Black Country Communion Store

BBC Review

The term ‘supergroup’ is something of a golden albatross. On one hand, it tells us here is a band of established, successful musicians whose combined talents will undoubtedly deliver the sonic equivalent of The Second Coming. On the other hand, it tends to arouse astronomical expectations which are almost never met. Wade through a few albums by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Firm, Traveling Wilburys and Power Station, for example, and you’ll get the picture.

Although ambivalent about the supergroup label since their inception last year, Black Country Communion feature a formidable line-up of familiar names with a century-plus of experience between them. Joining vocalist/bassist Glenn ‘Voice of Rock’ Hughes (Deep Purple/Black Sabbath) are former Dream Theater keyboard player Derek Sherinian, drummer Jason Bonham (son of late Led Zeppelin sticksman John) and guitarist Joe Bonamassa, currently one of the top bluesmen in business.

As pools of talent go, this one’s deep, and the old saying "If a bomb went off in that studio, etc" definitely applies. With direct links back to the mighty motherlode of Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, it’s no big surprise that BCC have delivered a dozen shots of timeless, classic rock. It’s ballsy, bluesy, even soulful at times, and with none of the bleached-out blandness that ego-clashes and endless compromises can bring. It’s no secret that things weren’t always super-smooth between them, but they got over it, got on with it, and the result is simply stellar.

Drawing on all that experience without sounding like you’re long enough in the tooth to have all that experience to draw on is a magical thing. Hughes in particular is on fire and in better voice than ever. Somehow – God alone knows how – wasted years of cocaine and Mars Bar binges (don’t ask) haven’t trashed any part of his anatomy required for singing. Blazing performances aside, the key here is the songs, which are wonderfully crafted. The title-track is an attention-grabbing opener, while current single One Last Soul is simply outstanding, but there’s really nothing here that shouldn’t be. These guys have defied the odds to deliver a collection that’s all gold and no albatross.

--Greg Moffitt

Its always a matter of taste, but this album in my opinion is fantastic. No bad tracks - a couple of not great tracks [but definitely not bad]. I have come to this album from a number of directions. Trapeze were my favourite band in the 70s and should have doen a lot better and probably would if Glenn Hughes had not gone to Deep Purple. Jason Bonham -always a great drummer, and Joe Bonamassa - what a guitarist came across him on a Lesley West Album and have followed his work ever since, his love and interpretation of 70s rock/blue is second to none. So when I heard they had got together with a top class keyboard player [Derek] to do a rock album I was hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

Well all my hopes were fulfilled the album works as a unit, no prima donna bits [well maybe some of glenns singing, but only a little] and 12 solid well played hard hitting and annoyingly memorable rock tunes. You can hear that they enjoy playing it and the solo work from each player is top class. If this was out in the 70s it would have cleaned up! You can hear Free , Bad Company, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Purple nuances in places but those guys set the scene and how Black Country Communion deliver is very much with their own style and verve.

The album is a grower, 3 /4 plays and you are hooked, first play track 1 hits you, dips for 2 up for 3 level for 4 up for 5 then it just keeps getting better. after 4 plays I defy anyone [who likes the genre ] to keep bits out of their memory.

I love it, I just hope they do some more

Superb Classic Rock 3 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD
After seeing a lot of good reviews of this album and being aware the buzz on the band/'super group' I'm pleased to report this is a belter of an album.
If you like classic hard rock with a 70's feel this album nails it. Owners of Deep Purple's 'Come Taste The Band' and 'Burn', you will totally lap up Black County Communion's debut album.
Glenn Hughes is given the chance to let his astounding vocal ability shine and as for Joe Bonamassa is there no end to his talent and creativity? He appears to relish unleashing his hard rock chops on this album.
Thunderously backed up by Jason Bonham on drums and Derek Sherinian giving his Hammond organ a good hammering.
Nice work guys.

Having received the CD and DVD at 10:30AM on the day of release I've now listened to all the tracks twice over. I got a preview listening to the special live concert broadcast on the UK's Planet Rock radio station the night before.

What comes over is the pace at which the whole set was laid down (4 days) and then mixed in it's entirety over the next 10 days. Because of this it sounds pure like rock albums of the early 70s, not self indulgent or difficult to fathom.

Glenn Hughes vocals are fabulous and he has that special powerful rock voice ideally suited to the band. His bass is a superb complement to Jason Bonham's heavy and full drumming.
Derek Sherinian plays Hammond and Korg keyboards and adds a sense of old prog rock feel to the mix.
Joe Bonnamassa has been able to change from being a blues legend to a hard rock god with ease and plays some superb riffs and then comes out with some brilliant solos especially in Beggarman and Song of Yesterday.

If you are a fan of Purple, Zeppelin, Free you will not go wrong buying this great CD.

Disappointing
Four great musicians let down by the most boring songs ever written and rock vocals from the dinosaur era. Ive tried, but on the ninth play I gave up after thirty minutes. Read more

Unusual but brilliant.
This band is a new find for me and I love their tuff. I have both of their albums now and must say, they're unusual, almost a mix of a few bands with a hint of Serj Tankian. Read more

Unremarkable
Having read the hyperbole I thought I'd give it a listen. Overrated, average, indifferent heavy rock. Hype. Hear it first.

great band, over compressed
I think that this is a well played slice of 70s rock with some real heavy hitters, BUT, as per the current trend for making everything loud, this is very over compressed. Read more
