5.0 out of 5 stars The guitarists guitarist ...36 years ago 7 Nov 2005
Format:Audio CD
Albert Lee's Black Claw and Country Fever sessions have always been shrouded by apocrypha and mystery. There were two bands, with the same members who went by both names. The only difference between them in 1969 was the Country Fever vocalist was Albert Lee, and the Black Crow vocalist was Chas Hodges. To make matters more confusing there was another Country Fever in England in 1969, and Lee played with them in live settings. While some of this gets ironed out by the liner notes, two things are certain: the first is that Lee played guitar and/or sang on everything here and that all of the material with the exception of his two solo singles -- the title track and a cover of Bob Dylan's "Too Much of Nothing" -- was recorded in 1969. As for the music itself, there are a hell of a lot of Dylan covers here, and they were all recorded just after Dylan himself released them: "Lay Lady Lay," "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You," and a great cover of the Dylan/Richard Manuel classic "Tears of Rage." The Band is also referenced outside of this cut by the inclusion of a cover of "Across the Great Divide." Other covers include tough, rollicking reads of "Six Days on the Road" and "Rocky Top."
Amazingly the production on these sides sounds contemporary still and the integrity of the performances wears as well or better than the Byrds' attempts at country-rock and still astonishes with its sheer verve and virtuosity. The sound is great here and Peter Doggett does an exemplary job of trying to make sense of the nonsensical in his liner notes. For anyone interested in hard country and alt-country, this is an essential addition to the collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early Albert Lee 16 July 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Early Albert Lee, with , Chas Hodges in the group. The recordings on this album are apparently 20 years old (so the sleeve notes say). I would rate this album high and it's great owning a bit of 'Albert Lee' recording history. Listen to the tune previews and you'll soon have your feet tapping and the air-guitar playing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid playing, strong song-craft. Holds up amaizngly well. 26 Sep 2011
By Jeffrey L. Witt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
These songs were all recorded between late '68 and May '70. I would call it country-rock. The recordings are clean, and not over-produced; you can really hear the quality of the playing on all the tracks. If you have eclectic tastes (and if you are looking here because you are a fan of Albert Lee, you likely do), you will probably enjoy this. I just listened to it again after re-discovering it while straightening out my CD collection, and have ripped it to my drive at work so I will be listening more often.

The songs are definitely "listenable" (some would call it pop) without being overly-commercial. There are tasteful solos tucked into well written songs - real songs, with verses, refrains, bridges, modulations and memorable melodies. The vocals are more than adequate, though not stellar.

As I am writing this, I'm listening, tapping my toe, and just generally grooving to it. Good stuff. Good tunes expertly executed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Black Claw & Country Fever-Albert Lee 4 Jun 2008
By featfan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I have always admired Albert Lee's playing, so I decided to try this collection of early recordings. Not quite what I expected. The playing is there, but the songs leave me wanting something else. I think I should have tried something a little later in his career, as he seems to be finding the right venue for his talents. Not a bad collection, but I'm sure he has dome better work.
