Product Description

In the imaginary Land of Prydain, where "evil is never distant," it has become imperative that the Black Cauldron, chief implement of the diabolical Arawn, be destroyed. In this cauldron Arawn has created his terrible army of deathless warriors from the stolen bodies of the slain. For each of those chosen to journey to Arawn's domain, the quest has a special meaning, and to Taran, Assistant Pig-Keeper, the adventure becomes a glorious opportunity to wear his first sword and prove himself a man among men.

After seeing the Disney movie "The Black Cauldron", I became interested in the books by Lloyd Alexander, and I absolutely loved them! I have read them several times now and they still remain gripping. Even though they are traditionally written for young readers, I think they are suitable for anyone who loves adventure and imagination. The stories are very witty and also pretty exciting. Alexander combines old Welsh myth with very recognisable characters which is really very nice. "The Black Cauldron" has always been one of my favourites parts of "The Chronicles of Prydain". All I can say is that it is pure entertainment and I can recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy, no matter how old you are.

This is the second book in the Chronicles of Prydain, the characters are a little bit older and, for the most part, a little bit wiser. Taran has found that although there is glory in being a 'hero' that there is more in taking pride in everyday tasks like Assistant Pig Keeping. The companions seek to find and destroy the Black Cauldron, thus ridding Arawn of his Cauldron Born, learning more about themselves on the way. I have just finished reading this to my oldest child and she loved it, sometimes it was a little hard for her to understand, but that encouraged questions. She loves the scatterbrained Eilonwy and little Gurgi. If you enjoy titles such as Narnia, Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter then this is definitely worth considering, not just for Children but adults alike.

I first read the Chronicles of Prydain as a child and recently refound the books at the bottom of an old storage box, which was coincidental as I'd been thinking about reading these tales again for some time. This is the second book of the quintet and picks up where The Book of Three left off with a slightly older and possibly wiser Taran and friends including the scatty Princess Eilonwy and the lovable Gurgi aiding Prince Gwydion of the House of Don in a quest to destroy the Black Cauldron and with it the undead Cauldron-born warriors. This is a well crafted but straightforward high fantasy book based in Welsh Mythology. It is in essence a 'children's book' but should appeal to open minded readers of all ages. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the chroncicles over Christmas with several munchings and crunchings and as I nurse my poor tender head!!
