This book could have been dreadful, if written by the wrong sort of person - and I confess, when I unwrapped it on Christmas Day I experienced a spasm of apprehension. Instead, it turned out to be intelligent, ironic, informative and entertaining.

Various superstitions, some better known than others, are simply set out one after another like mini-chapters, with an text explaining their origin, regional variations, and background. It is all done very soberly but never tediously. A handsome font and neat little chapter-heading illustrations make it all go along in style.

This is not by any means an academic book; it aims to amuse, and succeeds. A brief but interesting introduction looks at the psychology and history of superstitious belief, and is full of good sense. There are occasional bits I'd take issue with; were dogs considered by the Egyptians to give warning of events to come because Sirius, the Dog Star, rose just before the Nile flooded - or was, perhaps, the "Dog Star" so named because it gave warning of the Nile flooding? But these are quibbles and by and large the book appears well-researched and sensible. There is an excellent index.

Buy this book for a superstitious friend; it will simultaneously amuse them and make them understand better the foolishness of superstition.

This book brought back so many memories of my childhood when people were much more superstitous. All these and more were frequently quoted from my grandmother.

ok maybe i've delved too deeply into the world of superstition but i loved this book.

a slice of the unexplained is irresistable and you may find yourself behaving rather oddly to avoid bad luck. All good fun, enjoy it!
