it's difficult to put into words what makes this album so special - as the moods and emotions of the music itself are so understated and perfectly judged... it's a lot more mellow than the music of the detroit techno masters, but easily the equal of any of Carl Craig's stuff in terms of melody.
The music was supposed to have been inspired by Detroit's architecture and it does sound like a film score in places, as it's so intensely evocative. Excellent, mature music that sounds just as good as background music as it does through headphones.

A superb follow up to his previous album, 'Excerpts'.
It does lose a bit compared to it's predecessor due to some tracks feeling a bit aimless and lost, but on the whole it's a great album. Continuing with the street sounds, filmic soundscapes and superb production that made his last album so appealing, you can't go far wrong with this one either.
A perfect Detroit ambient/electronica feast!

I have lots of music and I listen to lots of music. And this is one of my favourite albums. If you are stressed, listen to this, and remain stressed, I suggest you seek help from a Doctor.

Words can't explain just how great this cd is!!! 20 Feb. 2005
By The River - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Like most people, I first saw this cd on one of those music guides to show the person's favorite cds "Black Buildings" by Detroit Escalator Co. was on it. Don't get discouraged by the price, this cd is from PeaceFrog Records (UK) which didn't print a lot of copies for some reason. I would describe the music to be "ambient and relaxing." The everyday life of urban Detroit inspired the artist with sounds that resemble its atmosphere and industrial aspects. I compare this album as a big burst of fresh air due to the cheesy & unoriginal music that dominates its genre. I pretty much enjoyed every song on this cd, but if I had to pick a couple standout tracks, they would be "No. 2", "Point of Entry" & "Inverted Man (Dreaming)". Go to Crowsnest.com for track samples of this album.
Detroit Escalator Company, The - Black Buildings 22 Feb. 2011
By scoundrel - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
On The Detroit Escalator Co.'s second full album, Black Buildings, Neil Ollivierra manages once again to coax emotion from machines. The bass seems a bit more pronounced, as if he were constructing solid foundations for these buildings -- but keep in mind that bass does not always translate into kick drums. "No2," for instance, swims in the bass, but manages an ambient elegance. Mark my words, the compositions are solid. "Manual Transmission" thrums with beauty; "Gathering Light" continues the ambient beauty. "Fractal (In)" glistens and shimmers; "Float" is pretty much self-explanatory. The Detroit Escalator Co. makes one-of-a-kind music. Just listen and you'll agree.
no, really - we're not kidding. 17 Mar. 2005

this CD really is that good. if you are at all into this genre, you absolutely must purchase it at once. it literally transports you ... definitely a soundtrack for urban life, day or night. it's simply sublime, honest. well worth the price.

I have always enjoyed electronic music. Detroit Escalator Company is just great. I have not tired of the music. The music is entrancing and the tune Gathering Light is catching is a circular type way. Makes me think....
