Amazon.co.uk Review
One of the few genuinely outstanding British comedy shows of the past decade, Black Books unites excellent comedic performances, very funny scripts, and plenty of rewatch value.

The concept is simple enough. Bernard (expertly played by Dylan Moran) runs a bookshop. The only problems are he can't stand people, hates customers, and would far prefer to be barking out cutting remarks and drinking wine. Still, it's after drinking much of the aforementioned wine that he offers Manny (Bill Bailey, again in terrific form) a job. Manny accepts, and finds his daily life involves taking abuse from Bernard, while remaining strangely and resolutely upbeat. Fran (Tamsin Greig) meanwhile also likes her wine, and finds herself stuck between the two of them, with a few odd encounters of her own thrown in too.

So far nothing particularly out of the ordinary, right? Well, mix in some of the creative force behind Father Ted, combine those aforementioned performances, and simmer to the point where episode after episode garners a cocktail of sniggers and belly laughs, and you have something really rather special. Like many of the best shows, the curtain has come down on Black Books after only three series. But the long-lasting legacy are episodes that are set to be enjoyed for a long, long time to come. --Simon Brew

DVD Description

Black Books: Series 3 continues to provide lots of laughs and entertainment from the surreal comedy series which follows the lives of the "Black Books" store workers, Bernard and Manny, and their friend next door, Fran. The hilarious trio does all it can to keep the outside world outside of the bookshop--even to the point where they don't care if they sell a single book. Their unbelievable stupidity means that life is never simple. Episodes in this series include:

- "Manny Come Home"
- "Elephants and Hens"
- "Moo-Ma and Moo-Pa"
- "A Little Flutter"
- "Travel Writer"
- "Party"

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime comedy, 3 Oct 2006

This third series is as good the first two series if not better.
The opening episode is one of the best of all. A competitor bookshop 'Goliath Books' has opened next door and Manny (Bill Bailey) is now working there. He left 'Black Books' after his hand was burnt by Bernard. Simon Pegg plays the Manager of Goliath books and really adds another dimension to the show. Shame he couldn't have done more. This episode is absolutely brilliant and I must have watched 8 or 9 time now.

The episode 'Moo-Ma and Moo-Pa' contains perhaps the most surreal moment of the entire series when Bernard and Fran go a under a dinner table in a restaurant to pick up a piece of cutlery and there is a whole bar under the table! In case you hadn't worked it out Moo-Ma and Moo-Pa are Manny's parents who come down to visit, much to Bernards disgust.

Sadly there is no commentary on the series 3 disc. The commentaries on series 1 & 2 were almost as good as the shows themselves. However the out-takes and deleted scenes are good, and as whole the DVD easily merits 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truely Brilliant, 1 Jan 2007

The ingredients of superb casting, great script writing, a touch of surrealism and some brilliant classic slap stick moments make this make this a shear delight. Not many comedies make you laught out loud when you watch them by yourself - this one does and it delivers the laughs by the bucket full in all three series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new breed of comedy, 4 Oct 2006

Dylan Moran. Bill Bailey. Anyone who knows what these names mean and what it means when they come together would probably scream in delight and excrete some sort of magical fluid. And rightly so. For this series has not disappointed the Black books, Bailey and Moran fans out there with its unique style of side splitting, pants pissing comedy. Though maybe a bit esoteric (it only ranked about 54 in the 100 greatest British sitcoms) and with slightly rusty acting, the lunatic humour is still very much apparent and I feel it belongs up there with Father Ted and the other great ridiculous comedies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Show but DVD does not work
The Show is great an very funny but I have found that with some of the DVD's one of the episodes jumps at the begining. This means that the first part is unwatchable. Read more
