This is the kind of book that seems to be designed to be read when you have lots and lots of time on your hands, beceause believe me, you'll need it! For the first 300 pages or so, several stories seem to run together in parallel tandem, seemingly completely divergent from each other. Yet as the reader continues, and we learn more and more about the histories of the various characters, the plots become intertwined. The interesting thing in the book is, like many of his works, the complex characters, half of whom never meet each other, yet all of whom affect the course of each others lives. The plot of this book is very complicated , possibly too much so, but it is still a highly entertaining work, examining the influence of power and wealth, both on society itself and those who inhabit it it, especially those at the "top". There are several important issues within the book itself, which challenges our views of things, especially on life and death and our fear of the inevitable swipe of the grim reaper's scythe. I obviously won't tell you what happens at the end, but all I will say is that it is highly ironic, and the old addage of becareful what you wish for is truly, and in my view poetically, realised. Enjoy the book, I did.
