Review

"Summers has provided a record -- oral remembrances, antique advertisements, fantasy high-fashion spreads, working girl composite shots -- that stitches together the flourish and fanfare with the contortions and compromise that black women endured to fit ideals of imagination -- without losing their sense of self." -- Lynell George, "Los Angeles Times"Rich and inspiring"-- "Essence magazine"In the ground-breaking new book, "Skin Deep: Inside the World of Black Fashion Models, " former Ford model Barbara Summers penned what goes on behind the scenes in the glamorous, controversial and unique world of Black models. Product Description

Barbara Summers is a true fashion insider. Drawing from 17 years of experience as a Ford model and more than a decade of interviews with models and fashion professionals, she has created Black and Beautiful, the first book to recognize the powerful impact black models have had on both the fashion industry and popular culture. With insight and flair, Summers chronicles the evolution of black models-including Beverly Johnson, Helen Williams, Iman, Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, and others - whose names may have been forgotten but whose faces have left a lasting impression - exploring the behind-the-scene challenges that tested their courage, endurance, and integrity in a world both glamorous and harsh. Illustrated with more than 250 breathtaking images by the world's most acclaimed photographers, Black and Beautiful is a crowning tribute to the beauty - and intelligence, heroism, and power - of black women everywhere.

What a wonderful retrospect of the hard work black women have made in the entertainment industry 18 Feb 2007
By Lamont K. Pippins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I found this book so interesting and needed to reflect the wonderful work black women have made as objects of beauty. I was suprised to know that women like Daphne Maxwell-Reid was a cover model. This book is a definate reference manual for black history.
