Product Description

Product Description

The Xbox is an exciting and fun video game console - but that's only half the story. Inside the case, Microsoft placed a customized PC that you can push well past the limits of Halo and NBA Live. In The Black Art of the Xbox Mods, gamer, programmer and midnight hacker Jonathan Harbour show you how to crack the case, strip your Xbox down to the motherboard, and take control from the inside out.

When you're finished, you'll know how to install a mod chip, boot up in a new operating system, and run cool third-party software. You'll also learn how to trick out your Xbox with case mods, glowing lights and other features to let the world know your Xbox has come a long way since you brought it home from the superstore.

With hundreds of pictures and step-by-step instructions, The Black Art of the Xbox Mods isn't for the faint of heart. But, if you want a 300GB Xbox that plays CDs, DVDs, and glows like an alien spacecraft, then this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent step by step guide, 25 Aug 2005
By C. Verspeak "f*" (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I've had an Xbox for a few years now and love my little black box. But, with Xobx 360 out soon, the question arises, what will become of my original machine?

Like you, I've heard of mod-chips, although they always seem to be spoken of in hushed tones on the forums I frequent due to M$'s hostility towards them. A bit of research on the web shows there are chips available for sale that bypass the M$ BIOS and allow you to use your Xbox like a PC (cos that's what it actually is, a PC optimised for games). Some sites also give instructions on how to install the things. But many of them are heavy on jargon. Its almost as if the writers assume you have actually done all this before. What if you're a (takes a deep breath and looks around to see who's watching) 'noob' to modding?

This book is refreshingly different. While the author does appear to assume you are new to hardware mods, he doesn't write as if its a bad thing at all. Instead his book opens up modding your box as a doorway into a whole new realm of possibilities.

Included are step by step instructions for: Opening your Xbox, including the type of tools you will need and safety precautions. What a MOD chip is and how to fit one (this section does focus on the Xenium chip, but gives enough detail that you could fit any other chip instead). How to install a BIOS and step by step instructions for three dashboards (Avalaunch, EvoX, and Xbox Media Centre). How to select and fit a new hard drive, including transferring your data from your old drive. How to pimp your Xbox with LEDs and cold cathodes.

There are LOADS of pictures for every process too, so you shouldn't be getting lost halfway through an operation.

There is only a little jargon in the chapters dealing with adding software such as BIOS to your modded box. But not so much you can't figure out what you actually have to do, perhaps with some Wikipedia help.

This is a guide to technical procedures like I would write it - clear language, no assumption of previous experience in the field, enthusiastic and well illustrated. you might be able to get a lot of this info on some form on the net, but it won't be from a single source, nor will it be as easy to read and understand.

It so good you will probably become a mod addict, unable to find enough lights and parts for your rejuvenated box. When Xbox 360 comes out, I'll be using this book to convert my old console into a 300GB media server. With flashing lights.

Its so good I'll be looking out for any more manuals by the same author for Xbox 360.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good...but outdated, 30 May 2009
Unfortunately for the author (but great for the rest of us) xbox hacking has progressed far beyond mod-chips. You can run it as a PC without even opening the box, and for a full 'hardware hack' only two pins need soldering, no mod chip required.
