Book Description

7 Jan 2011
Part art book, part craft kit, 100% fun: this book contains thirty-two dolls, hundreds of clothing and accessory options, how-to for custom dolls and clothes and craft projects. A short time ago, the author discovered that there is a hidden demand for paper dolls when she listed a set of three in her shop and promptly sold hundreds. Some people played with them and some framed them. This book was created as a grander version of her successful experiment. Fans will snap up this book for the original art alone, while crafters will love the easy approach to making customised paper projects. Readers can copy pages as templates, but they can also cut pages straight from the book! With 32 pages of cardstock, readers just need scissors and glue to get started on a craft project. Once the doll(s) are created they can be used for scrap-booking, greetings cards (think customised wedding invitations made easy), frameable family portraits and more. From the instructions for using inks and paint for custom dolls and clothes to the craft projects themselves, this is a sophisticated take on a nostalgic craft.

Review

Praise for "The Black Apple's Paper Doll Primer"
"This book is packed full of loveliness--stunning paper dolls, creative paper projects, even a stellar toy theater, all with Emily's unique blend of irreverent sweetness. Please be seated with smelling salts nearby: Fainting might occur. It's that good."
--Amy Karol, author of "Bend-the-Rules Sewing" and "Bend-the-Rules with Fabric"

"A trove of great imagination, and many fine diversions."
--Rob Kalin, founder of Etsy.com

"It's like getting to play with the characters of Emily's paintings and step a little closer into their world."
--Jenny Hart, author of "Sublime Stitching "and" Embroidered Effects"

Praise for Emily Martin:
."..sweet and appealing..."
--Rob Walker for "The New York Times Magazine"

"The world of Emily Martin is enchanting, exquisite, and ethereal. Behind the soft hues and the peaches-and-cream palette, one can see a lively and fertile mind at work. An aching and mysterious sweetness blends with beguiling touches of the enigmatic and the peculiar, and the results are often remarkably sublime."
--Richard Sala, author of "Peculia, Delphine, "and" Cat Burglar Black"

"The Black Apple is the perfect place to turn to for a little taste of culture."
--"Alternative Press" magazine

4.0 out of 5 stars a whimsical treat 11 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an unusual book with a vintage chic feel. I'm not sure if its mainly aimed at kids or adults though, to me it seemed more like a pretty picture book for grown ups to flick through, especially if you had a penchant for cutting out paper dolls in your youth! Which is actually the main reason I bought this book, I wouldn't dream of giving it to my two daughters to cut up - even though both of them loved reading the little stories of the dolls and the things to do section at the back. I would recommend keeping this book uncut and buying the set of three paper dolls the author has on her shop website on 'etsy,' that should be sufficient to keep the kids amused, so you can enjoy keeping the book as a little novelty treasure for many years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect 18 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
While this book looks beautiful, I was a bit annoyed that some of the pages, that you are meant to cut out are printed on both sides.

I also expected that some of the paper dolls would "pop" out for younger children. I bought this book as a gift for my niece for her 7th birthday, and it has gone down well with her, but I am not sure if she has yet to cut it out. I am wondering if it will be too fiddly for her.

But then you have to question what age range this book is aimed at? No teenager, with the necessary dexterity is playing with paper dolls.

However, the artwork, the characters, the imagination, the creativity both in the book, and asking from the reader is topclass. I like that the characters look nothing like any of the mass produced dolls "bratz" etc. Hopefully this book gives a child another aspect of art and design.

So great effort Emily, publishers please take note of the production issues, that I noticed.

5.0 out of 5 stars paper dolls for grown up girls 23 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
i had to add a comment here, having read the first review.

this is not really a book for anyone under the age of 15.

beautifully illustrated, it does have things on both sides of the pages in places, but also clearly says photocopy! use your discretion to pick and choose the outfits and scenes for the theatre. frame the figures, put your own face on them, give em to people, stick em on birthday cards.

truthfully this book would be wasted on anyone younger than a teen.

go on, you know you want to ...
