Amazon.co.uk Review
Takashi Ishi's visually stylish The Black Angel is a fascinating cross between Japanese gangster film and Jacobean revenge tragedy. Sent away to the US after the slaughter of her parents by rivals led by her half-sister Chaiko, Ikko (Riona Hazuki) returns determined to reclaim her yakuza kingdom. Ikko is obsessed with childish memories of Mayo the hitwoman, the original Black Angel, entrusted with getting her out of the country. The intervening 14 years have been hard on Mayo--being the Black Angel is tough on the nerves--and she is hired to kill Ikko, not realising they have met before.

This is a tragic film in which three strong women are destined to destroy each other through the trickery of male betrayal; from the beginning, as a child is smuggled away and a mother told the infant is dead, it is clear that we are in a land of myth, with no happy endings. A night time Tokyo of bright lights and dark shadows, of dead-end corridors and escalators that lead you only to your death, is provided as a moody backdrop. Takashi's inventive set pieces of mood and action include a shootout in a strip club set to Verdi's Requiem.

On the DVD: The Black Angel is presented on disc in widescreen, while the moody, atmospheric score is done full justice by the Dolby Digital soundtrack. The only special features are filmographies and biographies, production stills and the theatrical trailer. --Roz Kaveney

5.0 out of 5 stars Yakuza Genre at it's best, 6 Dec 2003
Takashi Ishii, with Kuru No Tenshi vol.1 (Black Angel) directs a superb piece of film-making not for the faint-hearted. Riona Hazuki gives a great performance of the beautiful, vengeful assasin on the trail of her parent's yakuza killers, finding out a few truths about her past on the way.

This story is violent, but with a couple of homourous moments, provided by Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi as Zill, thrown into the mix - some disturbing scenes, but all scenes are shot and produced well, even if some of them are cinematic cliches) - and nothing is portrayed too graphically, although it is definately deserving of it's "18" rating.

Tarantino must have been viewing Kuru No Tenshi before he came up with his "Kill Bill" storyline - that I am sure of.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad - hard nosed and very un hollywood in style, 22 Jul 2002
It is true that it reminds me in terms of sentiment of the Jacobean tragedies such as "The Revengers" by Kidd - a refreshing lack of the feel good schmaltz of hollywood. This film is hard and unpleasant to all its characters. It is well made and fast paced - the action moves well with good camerawork.
Well worth a watch - this was an exciting and involving film.

3.0 out of 5 stars a Solid Japanese Action Fare but nothing epic, 30 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Firstly I must admit while watching this movie I kept thinking this isn't the movie I thought it was going to be I expected more but by the end of the movie I thought It was an enjoyable one but quite average In many respects. It's a good movie but could have been better in certain places and some scenes weren't needed at all like the 2 sex scenes and the rape scene and there's a bit of nudity which lends nothing to the plot I don't mind a bit of nudity I'm no prude it doesn't offend me but in this movie it wasn't needed the action is overall was well done its not John Woo gunplay nor is it realistic, its sort of in between and some action scenes were under or over done also the acting overall was very good apart from a couple of scenes where mainly the female cast overplay a little but not enough to distract.
The twist is very predictable your pretty much told the twist along the way and by the time it's revealed you kind of say to yourself yeah I knew that.....

I feel I'm talking this movie down its not a bad movie at all its is a good movie that balances drama and action quite well its bloody but no more than most Japanese action movies I would give this movie 3 out of 5 it's a movie that maybe you should rent (if you can) or borrow first before buying as it wont be to everyone's taste.
