Bizet's lovely symphony is given a fine performance here. It is a work full of Mediterranean sun and many beautiful touches.He wrote it when he was 17 and just put it to one side and it was not performed until 60 years later, long after his death.Each movement is a delight but the slow movement is just exquisite.The other items are good, too, and the rarely heard 'Roma' is certainly worth hearing though it is not as memorable as the other two works recorded here.It has a lovely introduction.With fine performances, good sound and fresh, inspired music this disc is a winner.

Anyone interested in extending their collection of 19th century orchestral music should pay this record serious notice. These works may not be played with as much regularity as many other works but this CD makes a good case for their consideration. It opens with Bizet's Symphony in C, first written when he was just 17 years old. For me the work rewards repeated listening and whilst not perhaps being a masterpiece it does contain some fine moments. The first movement is rather Haydnesque, Whilst the slow movement is whistfull with a gentle oboe melody and a string tune that is reminiscent of the Symphony Fantastique. The third movement scherzo is for me the highlight of the whole piece, with an infection rhythm followed by a short yet heroic theme on strings. The fourth movement raps it up nicely and brings to mind Mendelssohn.
The Jeux d'enfants follows and, although all 5 movements are short, it has an abundance of charm and lyricism.
The Roma suite ends this CD and once again we see somthing of the invention of the mind that conceived the L'arlesienne suits.
All three pieces are very finely played and the sound balance is very good in this digital recording. Furthermore at nearly 76 mintutes long it represents very good value and anyone searchg for recordings of these works should be well pleased.
