Unusual for the time in that the original spoken dialogue is used (hooray! I won't go near a Carmen with recitatives!)and the pace of the drama fairly crackles along. A really "French" performance from everyone, with very high musical standards, and one can cope with the rather insensitive Jose. The Carmen herself is SO right for the part!

This is so worth investigating, especially at the Naxos price, that anyone who wants to get near to what Bizet must have wanted would be stupid not to buy this set.

I remember growing up with the LP selections from this set. None of the principals are so celebrity-based as today's stars, but the whole theatrical experience is very much a team effort. Cluytens is an ideal conductor in this idiom - Acts I and II are light-going and even parts of Act III. In Act IV the 'descent' into the final duet (and murder) is the more spine-tingling for that and conveys some of the shock which scandalised the first audience - who were clearly only there for a 'good night out' at the theatre. Solange Michel makes a likeable Carmen, the cigarette-girl who moves on quickly in her love-affairs. Jobin is rather maligned as Don Jose in the accompanying note. He's certainly capable of singing softly and does so when required. The Micaela is excellent, though the Toreador himself is average but with a pleasing voice. The sound remaster is really excellent in spite of minor background hiss. The spoken dialogue is a little truncated but delivered at a cracking pace which only a French cast can muster. Don't miss this as an extra addition to your other versions.
