Product Description

CD Description

Internationally renowned Andrea Bocelli, as Don José, brings a touch of sincerity and an arresting sound to Bizet's popular opera, Carmen. Marina Domashenko is a steamy and superb Carmen. The magnificent Bryn Terfel portrays a brilliant Escamillo. Conducted by Myung-Whun Chung. Popular arias include: Habanera, Toreador's Song, Seguidilla, and more.

Carmen with Bocelli 3 Aug 2010
Format:Audio CD
Bocelli is fine as a popular classical singer but as an opera singer he is a bit of a fraud. There are SO many recordings of Carmen out there that I would recommend selecting a different one.

It hurts me to say that the Artists & Repertoire division of Decca got it all wrong with the choice of a pop singer (Bocelli) and a powerful mezzo (Domashenko) whose singing teachers at the Ekaterinburg conservatoire forgot to tell her that opera is not just singing, but also acting. Actually you can hear it. This said, instead of a beautiful Gypsy with a fiery temper we get an academic Carmen that sounds like the fat lady with a big bosom - no attempt at showing Carmen's sensuality and insolence is made. Bocelli is off key from the very first notes. The Korean conductor should be fined for speeding.

The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France sounds good, but the overall impression of this recording is that it has been over-processed - the result is sterility.

There are many fine recordings of Carmen to choose from. Go to 'deccaclassics' and see what you'd like most. Good luck!

By RAE
Format:Audio CD
Carmen is a tragic story of Don Jose and Carmen. Carmen is a predatory female who wishes to make Don Jose her love. However, once she achieves this she tires of him. Carmen wishes for a life of total freedom and goes off with Escamillo, a bull fighter.

Don Jose is now infatuated by Carmen amd the tragedy is palyed out with Don Jose begging Carmen to return his love and start a new life with him far away. She calmly replies that she loves him no longer and will not give way - free she was born and free she will die.

Cheers are heard from the bullring and Carmen tries to enter but Jose bar her way. He asks her one last time to come back but she scornfully throws back the ring that he gave to her.

Jose then stabs her as Escamillo (bullfighter) is aclaimed in the arena, to the strains of the chorus of the "Toreador Song", she dies. Don Jose kneels in despair beside her. The spectators flock out of the arena and find Don Jose confessing his guilt over her dead body.

Andrea is a superb tragi-figure of Don Jose and his singing from the soul gives you a feeling of the pain and anguish that Don Jose feels.

I highly recommend Carmen to all those who love Andrea and opera.
