5.0 out of 5 stars Now we are cooking with gas! 15 May 2012
Format:Paperback
It is hard to not point out the fact that this is a cookbook, and that there already is a book about BizTalk recipes. It is also hard not to point out the fact that I love cooking but hate using cookbooks...

This is a cookbook I really, really like though.

I imagine that you, like me, have a collection of really good BizTalk blog post links in you browser of choice. When you use BizTalk, and when you read up on what others have written, then you bookmark certain posts for safe-keeping. You just know that "this is a good thing to remember for another day".

This book is like the best collection of links you could possibly have! A really good blog in book-form, or a blog-oriented book. First of all: buy this book. It is a given in any BizTalk developer team. The 25 spent on the book will be paid for over and over again as you save time during development and testing.

BizTalk Server 2010 Cookbook uses a very practical approach to problem solving. This is the only downside to the book. Sometimes it it too focused on how to solve something and not enough is spent on understanding it. Then again the author points you to further reading at the end of each recipe. So if you want to know more about something, you can find it easily. Personally I would like it to have been part of the book but I guess that is not up to me to decide.

The practical approach splits each recipe into different parts. First an introduction to present the challenges or the problem. Then follows a "How to" section, a "how it works" and the aforementioned "There is more".

Do not be fooled by the subtitle of the book "Quick answers to common problems" as the word "problem" might be associated with "bug" or "issue" and this is not the case. It is rather a case of "How to quickly, understand and perform common tasks" but that is a really bad strapline I agree.

The publisher has a complete listing of the books content and I encourage you read it but I would like to point out some of my personal favorites: BizTalk Server Automation: Patterns, Monitoring using Log4Net and Securing Message Exchange. The last one is in my opinion the best text on the subject I have seen. After reading it I feel that the usage of certificates in BizTalk is no longer hard, and I can understand it. Something I must admit to being part of my ignorance up until now.

So once again: Buy this book. It is smart, practical, well written and really useful.

Finally finished this book and I must say this is a fantastic book for BizTalk developers.
This book has helped me to learn and understand many best practices to follow while developing BizTalk solution.
This book has listed many developer friendly tools which can significantly enhance productivity of BizTalk applications.
Not only for developers, this book is a very good guide for administrators as well for monitoring and maintenance tools & tips.
A good consolidation of various valuable resources on net points you towards further reading.
Overall, A great book to start cooking BizTalk recipes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow recipes covering broad topics 1 Jun 2012
By Rohit Sharma - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I like the format of the book and Steef-Jan has done a wonderful job of covering broad topics relevant to both the development of BizTalk solution and administration of BizTalk environment in 50+ easy to follow recipes. Enough details has been provided about the topic in each recipe but the good thing about this book is that each recipe also contain There's more section having valuable resources to dive deeper into the topic discussed. Here is a brief overview of what has been covered in this book:
* The book starts with the most important topic of setting up the BizTalk environment. The newbie will like the recipe on how to use the BizTalk Benchmark Wizard to validate the Installation.
* Second chapter the recipes covered some of the popular design patterns like splitter, aggregator, retry pattern etc.
* Third chapter contain some useful recipes demonstrating how to instrument the BizTalk solution.
* In fourth chapter the focus is on securing message exchange and contains some useful demonstration on how to use certificate in BizTalk for signing and encrypting/decrypting the messages.
* Fifth chapter discuss recipes related to the WCF services and BizTalk
* Sixth chapter starts with a recipe on installation of AppFabric Connect and then have some useful demonstration on how to connect BizTalk with cloud.
* Seven chapter is specifically for BizTalk administration and contain some useful recipes on configuring the monitoring tools for BizTalk e.g. SCOM, BizTalk 360.
* Eighth chapter contain recipes on how to use the Business Rule engine.
* Last chapter focus on the unit testing of BizTalk Artifacts using the Visual Studio and Frameworks such as BizUnit, BizMock, and the BizTalk Map Test Framework
2.0 out of 5 stars Lab Manual Instructions with Limited Explanation for Learning What is Being Done 2 May 2013
By EG - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was quite disappointed with this rather expensive book. The step by step instructions resemble a lab manual that one encounters in a hands-on course. The problem with this approach is that there is no one to answer questions. The authors of the book assumes the reader has complete knowledge about maps, orchestrations, pipelines, ports, etc. and how they all tie together, and all that is needed is a simple guide to put everything together to solve a problem.

That is where I have issues. If someone is smart enough to learn the BizTalk tools thoroughly, then why wouldn't they be smart enough to use them together to solve a problem? Why would step by step instructions be necessary?

Since I don't know the BizTalk tools well enough, I needed a book that explains what each one does, why it was designed that way and how they all fit together. I wanted simple explanations merging into simple examples which then merges into more complex examples. This book does nothing for providing a basic foundation of understanding the tools. It's a complete waste of money for someone wanting to learn about BizTalk.
5.0 out of 5 stars A very practical book based upon a lot of experience. 29 May 2012
By Kent Weare - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Steef-Jan has a lot of BizTalk experience so it should come as no surprise that he has written a very practical book based upon a lot of real-world experience. This experience is demonstrated constantly through-out the book and was very refreshing.
