5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating & Entertaining!, 1 Feb 2011

This review is from: BitterSweet: The Memoir of a Chinese Indonesian Family in the Twentieth Century (Research in International Studies: Southeast Asia) (Paperback)
The Chinese minority group in Indonesia is the largest population of Overseas Chinese in the world. They account up to 60% of Indonesia's economy; they are highly educated, yet they only consist no more than 10% of Indonesia's 250+ million population. Sadly, "Orang Tionghoa" ("Chinese Indonesians") are one of the most repressed and discriminated group of people in the world. Only after the fall of Suharto regime that reasonable books have been written about the Chinese Indonesians, acknowledging their bitter sweet existence in Indonesia.

This book, in form of a memoir, was written by an Australian, about his Chinese Indonesian mother-in-law, who escaped one of the bad periods for Chinese Indonesians (mid to late 1960s) and settled in Australia. I find it fascinating and entertaining at the same time because being a Chinese Indonesian who was born in the 1970s; I had known very little facts about my ethnicity's historical background. Personal experiences and stories from family members/relatives were not sufficient to quench my curiosity. Anyone who is interested in learning about the history of Chinese Indonesians from the early 1900s to the 1960s should definitely read this book! Oei Tiong Ham (Oei Hui Lan/Koo Hui Lan/ Madame Wellington Koo's father) is also mentioned in this book several times.
