From International Bestselling and highly acclaimed author Mason N. Forbes, Bitter Sweet is a chilling expose and edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller A must read for fans of Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy and the Belle de Jour series

Harrowing, deeply moving, Bitter Sweet is a gripping revelation of human trafficking, escorts and police corruption

Nina’s double-life as a university student and an escort falls apart when she is drawn into a web of violence, human trafficking and police corruption.
When Nina rescues three girls from the clutches of a vicious trafficker a city-wide pursuit ensues, one in which Nina must outwit not only the police, but also the trafficker and a fate far worse than prosecution.
Can Nina avoid capture by the trafficker and a life of sexual slavery? Or will she in desperation contact the police? And can she avoid her worst nightmare – exposure as an escort?

In his heart-pounding début novel Mason Forbes takes the reader on a roller-coaster through the escort business, human trafficking and corruption from the city streets all the way up to the Crown Prosecution Service.

What readers and reviewers are saying about Bitter Sweet

“Aside from the cliff-hangers and the edge-of-your-seat thrill, the novel is, at its best, deeply moving--you get more than a glimpse into the heart-breaking experience of the victims of human trafficking” Meghan USA TOP 500 REVIEWER

“Bitter Sweet is a taut and gripping thriller that's also quite emotional” Alex Prosper USA TOP 1000 REVIEWER

“The style is authentic and in the new tradition of gritty, gripping, Stieg Larsson style crime novels” Constance Carter

“Bitter Sweet takes you on a fast paced and engrossing journey into the ugly truth of human trafficking” Sigi Lorenz

“Pretty tough to read at times, but it's a story that must be told” Brenda Lee

“This book is thrilling, challenging, and will leave you wanting more” Ricky Hansen

“You really don't know what you are in for until you get a few chapters in, but once that happens you will not put the book down” Adeshola

“The best book I’ve read this year” Gary Walker

“A well crafted critique of UK law enforcement system from an escort’s POV.” The News Letter.

"Forbes has succeeded in conveying the realities of prostitution, to cut through the superficial veneer which has effectively glamourised the subject of escorting in recent years, through the popular 'escort expose' novels and memoirs like Belle de Jour.
His brutal portrayal of the victimisation of women in the sex industry is more akin to Steig Larsson's epic novels, and he was astonished by just how different the media's representations of the lives of sex workers are to the nuanced reality."
The Belfast Telegraph.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real find. The unexpected and the unique. 11 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
An author with a top-flight story and a message which confronts preconceptions.

Action-packed, the pace is swift and the writing is sparse with a snappy style to carry you quickly through this tale of police corruption, human trafficking, and the escort business.

The opening chapters establish Nina's double life as an escort and a student, and her ambivalent but platonic relationship with Mike, a client, a middle-aged man. A spectre of menace is introduced early in the form of strange phone calls and an unscheduled "security upgrade" in the building.

Cut to action: Bitter Sweet runs on pure adrenaline as the pacing is exceptionally fast, and I would definitely concur with other reviewers that once you're hooked in, it is tremendously difficult to put down. The action sequences are deftly realised and genuinely edge of the seat, very much in the manner of cinema action thrillers.

Nina possessing a good moral compass, throws off a lot of the clichés of escorting - very refreshing. In fact, Nina dismisses all caution and displays single minded determination to rescue three girls, forced into sexual slavery.

So to sum up, a one-of-a-kind début with a good central storyline, good use of dialogue, an engaging protagonist and more than enough action to keep those pages turning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and easy to read. 17 Oct 2013

This is well written and mostly fast moving. Almost from the beginning you want to know what is going to happen next. One section, though exciting, is a bit long and a few minor points don't ring true to real life, but overall it is a good read. The main character's occupation is not one I enjoy reading about, but I appreciated the lack of salacious detail and the informative and thoughtful treatment of the trafficking issue.

Mason Forbes has totally blasted his way into crime fiction with Bitter Sweet. What a gripping novel. I was hooked right from the first chapter and from there-on-in each chapter had conflict, obstacles, suspense in abundance.
The story starts with the relationship of Nina and a client, Mike. He knows Nina is burning out, balancing her private life and being an escort. At the end of the first chapter the spectre of trouble looms and grows in the following ones.
Not wanting the help of a client, Nina does eventually seek Mike’s help as the trafficker, Erjon, makes his move to name and shame her publicly. Then Nina rescues the trafficked girls and the reader is catapulted into almost non-stop action. It is then nip-and-tuck all the way to about the two-third’s mark in the book. And that’s really all I can say without giving too much away.
The story is absolutely first class! From what I can gather, this is Mason Forbes' first novel, but I'm putting his story telling and writing skill right up there with the best.
Crime fiction fans will no doubt love Bitter Sweet. There is actually a lot more to this story than the title suggests as it hits upon a number of current social themes.
I think Mason Forbes has the perfect balance here of suspense, victimisation, thrills-and-spills and social issues.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivated 14 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The most striking part of Bitter Sweet was our protagonist, Nina, who is forced to question her own lifestyle while trying to improve the lives of others. We experience her exploration into this dilemma while she is in the midst of saving her own life and those girls. This book had me a bit short of breath at times and wide-eyed as I anticipated so many times that the absolute worst would happen. During one of the climaxes, when something absolutely awful and heartbreaking goes down, I was surprised that there were more pages left because I was absolutely at a loss for how things could go on. Despite all this, the book read at a great pace, and I enjoyed every new element and character that was introduced.

The author, Mason N. Forbes was so great at keeping me, as a reader, captivated and close to the action. You could tell that he had invested much into the work and I commend the complexities and intrigue I got to experience from this book and the genre.
