Product Description

From one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, ROMAN POLANSKI (Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, The Pianist), Bitter Moon is a dark, intense and disturbing tale of sexuality and the human psyche. Whilst on a Mediterranean cruise, Nigel and Fiona (Hugh Grant and Kristin Scott Thomas) find a young French woman named Mimi (Emmanuelle Seigner) crying in a bathroom. Mimi's paraplegic American husband Oscar (Peter Coyote) forces Nigel to listen to how he and Mimi fell in love - as well as how they discovered kinky erotic games that turn to mutual sadism. Featuring brilliant performances from an all-star cast including Hugh Grant, Kristen Scott Thomas and Peter Coyote, Bitter Moon is undoubtedly one of the most shocking and blackest of comedies you are ever likely to see.

'Polanski ' class! 20 April 2011
By FAMOUS NAME VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Two couples travelling to India become acquainted - one of them is supposedly happily married - the other eccentric. The odd couple consist of a beautiful young woman and an older man in a wheel chair.

Each evening, the disabled man feels the need to unburden himself to the man from the other couple. (Hugh Grant) about the story of his courtship and marriage to the younger woman. The narrative swings dramatically from romantic, to the perverse - and then from happiness, to the most tragic...

'Bitter Moon', though a thoroughly perverse movie - from a totally different aspect really is quite beautiful... This is partly due to the soundtrack used (Vangelis) during some very romantic scenes when 'Oscar' (Peter Coyote) catches a glimpse of 'Mimi' (Emmanuelle Seigner) on a Bus without a ticket. To spare her the embarrassment of being thrown off, he slips her his own. Consequently, he is removed from the Bus and is unlikely to ever see the young woman ever again... However; he cannot forget the encounter, and is enchanted. He begins to search for her. This leads to an obsession when he is unexpectedly rewarded by finding her without even looking whilst taking another woman out to dinner. Whilst the man (Coyote) is not what you would call handsome, he does have a charismatic charm that seduces even the Viewer - as well as the girl!!

'Roman Polanski' (whilst ignoring his private life) is somewhat of an outstanding film maker. His movies tend to be rather long - but atmospheric, unusual - and full of quality. From this point of view alone his work tends to be interesting. I've always been drawn to the name since the much acclaimed 'Rosemary's Baby' of 1968. (see my Review for that title)

It's a pretty good story that highlights the closeness between love and hate - revenge and passion. It also does a pretty good job at showing how dependent a woman can become on a man - emotionally, and that with a man it's pure 'physical' - the woman only being able to get the same result from the man if incapacitated.

The woman begs at the man's feet to allow her to stay however he chooses to treat her. The man watches her squirm with sadistic sexual pleasure, and is totally unmoved - but it all backfires!

This movie is over two hours' long and includes a shock ending!

Also stars Stockard Channing and Victor Banerjee.

masterpiece truly 12 Aug 2011
Format:DVD
Ignore any negative comments. If you love challenging films which are ground breaking and daring you will love this. Inspite of the sex scenes it is not really erotic. It s not really a comedy, although the script is painfully funny at times. It's just refreshingly original and thought provoking with a deep insight into human nature and supression...but a whole host of other things too. It will not appeal to everyone. probably very few...and certainly not your granny. But this is a great acheivement and it gets better with every viewing. It really does have a strange, intense, dreamy quality about it all and finally the acting is flawless. All the characters are riveting.

temptation 15 July 2010
Format:DVD
This is an odd tale from this director,Polanski, which returns to earlier theme of pain and love. With a claustrophobic set, aboard a ship which seems forever to enclose and exagerate their emotions. Dark and passionate, the story revolves around the sexual dynamics of two couples on the voyage.
