Review

"It's always exciting to see a writer getting better and better, and Cath Staincliffe is doing just that." -- Val McDermid, Manchester Evening News

Product Description

On her first day back after the Easter break Manchester based Private Investigator, Sal Kilkenny takes on two new cases. The first is to discover who is sending offensive poison pen letters to hotel receptionist Lucy Barker. The second is surveilence work for a couple who want reassuring that there are no nuisance neighbours or criminal activity in the area they're planning to buy a new home. As Sal prepares to stake out the streets a bitter cold snap plunges the country into arctic conditions. Her stress levels are not helped by the escalation of the campaign against Lucy Barker and her inability to nail the perpetrator who maddeningly avoids capture. Plus there's trouble at home as Sal's daughter Maddie seems unable to settle at school. When Sal's normally mundane surveillance duties bring her face to face with a grim discovery and violent crime she's sure that it just can't get any worse before it gets better. Unluckily for Sal there is more than one surprise in store for her and a nightmarish sequence of events may well turn out to be a matter of life and death...

The new Sal kilkenny novel from Cath Staincliffe is a stylish and gripping read. Sal has to deal with a mysterious, untrustworthy client who leads her into nailbiting complications. Staincliffe's immaculate style and crisp vision move expertly between the domestic and professional worlds of her private investigator and drive this novel in the way that her many fans have come to expect. A vivid and absorbing read that leaves you wanting more.

An engrossing novel full of surprises and with a thrilling, packed plot with plenty to keep you enticed. With a combination of home-life and as a private detective, Cath Staincliffe's character of Sal Kilkenny is realistic and therefore a brilliant character to take us through this thrilling plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bitter blue and back with a fantastic novel, 2 Jun 2003

This review is from: Bitter Blue (A Sal Kilkenny mystery) (Hardcover)
The best Sal Kilkenny book in the series so far. It all starts off quite innocently with Maddie refusing to go to school, and Sal investigating cases that include hate mail sent to a young woman, and preparing a neighbourhood report for a couple wanting to move into Didsbury. All these threads to the story finally intertwine and everything is explained to the reader.
Events start to pick up very quickly and the taut pace is just perfect. By the end of the book you are completely hooked. The end is very tense - that's all i will say dont want to spoil it.

Changes in Sal's home life are imminent and her relationship with Ray is definitely about to change. Again we are shown more of Manchester and the North-West as our heroine's work takes her all over the county.

All in all , a fantastic book by a fantastic author.
