Initial impressions weren't good when I found that the micro USB connector wouldn't fit into the unit in order to charge it, and it was only after applying significantly more force that it finally went in. I had expected some damage but luckily there was none that I could see. Build quality is okay but nothing more although I do like the slightly rubberised appearance of the charger as it suggests that it could be cable of taking a few knocks when rolling around in a bag or vehicle's glove box. There is a built in LED torch which could also be handy in an emergency.

The power pack is quite a compact size and is only the size of large pack of mint sweets so it would be quite suitable for carrying in a pocket or bag as a spare power source. Mind you, it doesn't come with a case or similar so the USB cable would still have to be left loose in the same pocket too. Unlike a lot of other power packs this one has a maximum output of 1 amp which means that charging can take a lot longer to complete. Obviously, it's still better than not having a charger at all but if you are expecting your phone (or other gadget) to charge in the same time as it would from a mains supply then you may be disappointed. Where my phone would normally charge from flat in around 2.5 hours this one is much slower with even a partial charge (from 50% remaining) taking more than twice as long. For that reason I think my future use is going to be purely for emergency charging or when I want to use the phone whilst it is charging over a longer period (on a journey, etc). If I hadn't used any other power pack chargers like this then I might have been more impressed, but because I know that there are much better ones available I can't say that this is one I would recommend.

On opening it you realise this really is quite small. Essentially three items in the pack; the battery, a charging lead (micro USB - USB) and a handbook - actually an a5 bit of paper. There is no charger - the expectation being you already have that/those. I was pleasantly surprised that a lead was included at that price however the micro usb socket on the battery was really quite hard to get the lead into and the lead is quite short (around 25cms). The unit itself is just 9.8 x 2.2 x 2.2 cms. There is a 3 position switch on the side of the unit. At one extreme the unit is off and at the other the LED torch is on. In the centre position the unit charges or discharges depending on the connection. According to the outer box the output is 5V/1A so it will not be all that helpful on higher power devices.

I actually found the instructions wrong or at best badly written in at least one place as it states that the blue light will come on when the unit is charged - that is not the case so my assumption that the unit was fully charged when I got it was wrong. The red and blue lights come on when charging and the red one goes off when the unit is charged. This means that my initial test of the device doesn't mean that much as I tried it out on an older phone whose battery was pretty much dead. It charged the phone to 74% (2500 mAh battery). However when I plugged the battery pack in to recharge it I realised the instructions were wrong. The unit recharged in around 4 hours which seems fairly slow to me. It then charged my Moto G phone from under 20% to full again a little slower than the usual charger. Useful as a backup and emergency use and I will use it (& update this if there are any issues) however the quality and speed may mean it is worth looking at others.

Really great item which I'm reviewing with the idea that to have bought, this would cost me £12.99. Do I think it is good value? Yes I do. I have kept it at the bottom of my handbag so far and used it when my battery was almost out (11% left) and I intend when I go back to work next week to keep it in my locker.

You do need to keep the cable with it, I've just left it dangling there so I don't lose it. I've charged it up at my computer and then used all the juice and I've also charged it up on the mains as I would my phone; both worked well.

It is slightly wider than the palm of my hand but is lightweight and therefore fits in my handbag neatly and as my car key ring doesn't have a torch this has been a nice addition but wouldn't persuade me to buy the product.

The only disadvantage so far is that it is stiff to push the cable in and not that easy to see which part you've slid it to, only when the torch comes on do I know I've gone too far.

So, I got one full charge out of this one so that's fine for me, I don't camp out or anything so know I can charge it back up. If you needed longer charges, such as being in a tent for a weekend then you may be better with TP-Link TL-PB10400 10400 mAh Portable Power Bank External Battery Charger (2 USB ports for iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy, Android Smartphones and Tablets) as this holds 4 charges but is over twice the price.

I'm really pleased with it.

This is a very handy item. It's small enough to fit in a pocket or bag so that you can charge your device whilst out and about. It does need charging itself though so you would have to ensure it was fully charged before taking it out or know that you will have somewhere to charge it, e.g.. you could leave it at work and use a computer to charge it.. It has a useful, if small, LED torch.

One downside is the switch which needs to be on the middle setting to charge. There don't appear to be any notches so it's not easy to find the right place. Also the instructions aren't quite right with regard to which light comes on during or after which charge but it's easy enough to work out.

Nice little product but there may be better around (I haven't tried any others).
