Product Description

Sam hasn't seen his first love, Cat, for 10 years. But now she's back and is asking for help to kill a vampire. Sam doesn't believe in vampires, but he does believe the marks on Cat's body. Are they self-inflicted, or is there really a vampire?

By Daniel Jolley HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This novel is somewhat unusual in that it really has the feel of a short story. There is not a great deal of "depth" here. This is the first Laymon book I have read, so I don't know whether or not the writing in this book is typical of Laymon's other works. In a way, this lack of depth works in Bite; this kind of tale would seem to require a brisk, off-the-cuff pace to it--otherwise, the reader would have too much time to question the things going on here. Basically, the protagonist drops everything and quickly agrees to help an old flame murder a "vampire" (while this vampire is indulging in carnal pleasures with this man's "true love"), and then agrees to haul the body out to the desert for some forgettable reason. Along the way, the couple ends up meeting three of the most unusual, unlikeable (and not in a good way) characters in the world, fighting with, for, and against them in turn, all the while facing ridiculous situations that could easily have been avoided. Of course, they still find time to pause from their bloody, exhausting efforts in order to "enjoy each other's company." I ended up hoping everyone in this book would die. As I try to describe this book now, it really does sound like a stupid, hackneyed premise. Action alone keeps this story going; when all is said and done, there is no real story here--just action. The reader is not going to learn any universal truths in this book (and this is not the author's intention, anyway), but Laymon does manage to keep your interest throughout by never letting the pace of the story slow down. This is a good read for people seeking entertainment; those who would approach this book with a more serious mindset will be disappointed.

Format:Mass Market Paperback
Where can I begin? I have read every Richard Laymon novel he has written. As I have just read Bite for the second time, I can honestly say that is is brilliant, nay, a masterpiece. This book, like every other Laymon, has super tight writing. You can really hear, smell and feel everything that is happening. Laymon writes characters that are among the most believable, three-dimensional and exciting ever written - and that is rare in any genre of book. Bite is a cross between the hip, cool, fast paced style of From Dusk Till Dawn, and the scary, heart pounding gruesomness of night Of The Living Dead. - it would make an awsome movie. Laymon is a true master; a professional, an entertainer, and a writer of TRUE horror. You havn't lived until you've read a Richard Laymon. You have to go out and buy this book. I mean it - DO IT !!! This is Laymon at his best. It is sensational.

Fantastic! 24 April 2007

Bite is yet another brilliant horror novel from the master, Richard Laymon. Very addictive and suspencefull with a generous portion of Laymon's usual sense of humour added in - this book had me laughing out loud quite a few times.

Also, I think that this one of his more suspencefull novels (of the fifteen or so that I have read) especially in the opening chapters. While Sam and Cat where waiting for the vampire to arrive I was pratically tearing through the pages to see what would happen and this is the only book that has made me do that. I was very impressed with the suspence and tension.

Although, I really loved this book, a warning to fans of vampire novels: the vampire is only a major part of this novel for the first 100 pages, the last three quaters or so revolve around Cat and Sam's encouter with a psychopathic drifter who they give a lift in their car (while trying to dispose of the vampire's body). Although the vampire is present all the way through the book, it is sort of pushed into the background until the very end.

The ending of the book which also very good with multiple plot twists during the last few chapters. I also liked the characters as they were well fleshed out and all had their own personalities.

I didn't want to read it alone in the dark!!!!!
The characters were very likeable, but the leading lady was a little too goofy to be believable for my tastes.
