Biography

by William Ruhlmann

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz ... Read more in Amazon's Miles Davis Store

CD Description

Recorded at the end of a tumultuous decade (August 1969), Bitches Brew reflected the chaos and beauty of a society stretched and stressed to its breaking point. This genre-bending, barrier-smashing double LP of boldly new music with dense textures and lengthy performances broke every rule of commerciality. These 40th Anniversary Editions are a tribute to both the man who changed the course of jazz (“four or five times,” as he himself once quipped), and the album that virtually single-handedly brought jazz into the commercial rock era, becoming no.94 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. Originally released in April 1970, Bitches Brew was informed by the music that Miles heard being produced in the era by Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, James Brown, Santana and Marvin Gaye, as well as the Beatles’ editing pyrotechnics.
The original double-LP’s six tracks –“Bitches Brew,” “John McLaughlin,” “Sanctuary,” “Miles Runs the VooDoo Down”, “Pharaoh’s Dance,” and “Spanish Key” – as formulated in the studio by Miles and his long-time producer Teo Macero, presented a seismic breakthrough in jazz/rock/funk/R&B. Session personnel included Miles on trumpet, Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone), Bennie Maupin (bass clarinet), Joe Zawinul (electric piano), Chick Corea (electric piano), John McLaughlin (guitar), Dave Holland (acoustic bass), Harvey Brooks (electric bass), Lenny White (drums), Jack DeJohnette (drums), Don Alias (congas), and Jumma Santos (aka Jim Riley - shaker). The Anniversary Editions present the music recorded at the principal Bitches Brew August 1969 recording sessions as well as live performances of some of the same music recorded later, showing further development of the material in the hands of master improvisers.
The super deluxe box package comprises two CDs with original 94-plus minutes of music plus six bonus tracks; a third CD of a previously unissued performance at Tanglewood, August 1970, with Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, Airto Moreira and Gary Bartz; DVD of a previously unissued performance in Copenhagen, November 1969, with Wayne Shorter, Corea, Holland and DeJohnette; Audiophile 180-gram vinyl double-LP gatefold replication of original album; 52-page colour 12x12 book with 5,000-word essay by journalist-author-producer-musician Greg Tate; Producers’ notes by Michael Cuscuna and Richard Seidel (the box’s Co-Producers); and Lenny White interview by author Ashley Kahn. The book features Mati Klarwein’s painting Zonked (a psychedelic portrait of Miles Davis’ wife, Betty, which also encodes a profile of Miles) on its cover, plus dozens of rare, unpublished photographs and record label memos; Memorabilia envelope containing a reproduction of the Davis Rolling Stone cover story from December 1969, previously unseen correspondence from Teo Macero’s archives, reproductions of three Fillmore West concert tickets from April 1970, high quality photograph prints, and a foldout poster of Miles Davis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sumptuous Boxed Set With Style and Substance 29 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well, it took a while to make it to these shores, but turns out to be well worth the wait. This is a sumptuous package, high quality, and with a host of wonderful artefacts alongside 4 discs of great material, including a host of previously unreleased music, and a high quality vinyl pressing of the original double LP.

The first two CD's consist of the original album plus two unissued takes from the sessions which were not even heard on the `Complete Bitches Brew' set of 1998. There are also four slightly less essential single edits which nevertheless round out the first two discs nicely.

It is perhaps a shame that the compilers reneged on their original plan to issue the original mix on CD rather than the 1998 remix, given that the original LP mix did appear on the `Complete Columbia Albums' box of last year, but the good news is that this mix does appear on the vinyl set included here.

There is a 3rd CD of an unissued set from Tanglewood Festival in August 1970, a 45-minute blast which really demonstrates the deep groove and overwhelming power which had developed in Miles' music over the year since `Bitches Brew' was recorded. There are enough differences here even between this set and the Isle Of Wight concert from the same month already heard and seen on the `A Different Kind Of Blue' DVD. The Tanglewood show is exclusive to this edition, and is very much worth having. It seemed like the musicians would change the music in some way almost on a weekly basis, and the recording quality is out of this world, presumably mixed from multitracks in the Bill Graham archive. It easily takes it's place alongside the sevral classic 1970 sets already issued. (It is of course possible Columbia will release this separately at a later date, but you pays your money and takes your chances, this is unreservedly a superb performance).

Add to this a fourth disc of a complete set on DVD from a year earlier on Danish TV and you have an excellently compiled collection with much to recommend it. The music on the DVD is more searching, more avant-garde than the monstrous funk of a year later, features Wayne Shorter and Chick Corea, and is a great quality colour transfer from the original TV tape with fully restored sound.

So...worthwhile buying for the audio visual content alone, where this set really kicks it in the clutch is the amazing packaging. As you unwrap the treasures within you really will gasp at the effort which has gone into this deluxe edition.

There is a stunning 12" x 12" 50 page fully illustrated book the cover of which is further unseen artwork by the original cover artist, the full size LP replica itself and another LP jacket featuring another stunning cover which houses the three compact discs/DVD. As if that wasn't enough, there is also a large square envelope containing a huge poster, contact sheet and print, tickets, a Rolling Stone article and even a copy of the memo sent by producer Teo Macero to the company asking if they're OK with Miles wanting to call the album `Bitches Brew` !

This is truly a treasure trove for the Miles fan, and genuinely does represent value for money even at £50. I couldn't wait until Christmas, but I'm sure there will be many who will be unwrapping this amazing set on the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars my first miles 26 April 2011
By doozer
Format:Audio CD
i took a chance after reading both previous reviews and i'm more than stoked at the quality of every little detail in the box- have to say the vinyl pressing is superb and not a blemish or even faintest crackle all the way through - and i can't stop playing it - it truly is an fantastic recording. And after all as it is a box set - the box gets full marks too - it fits all together perfectly and looks great.
Although this is my first miles album i can see myself staying with it for more than a while yet till i feel i need another one!!!
