Product Description

Review

Probably more than any other band, Bitch Magnet sent me in the direction I took with the music I have tried to make. --Ian Williams (Battles, Don Caballero)

Searing post-hardcore punctuated with bruised introspection that stands a mile high above most of its kin. ... Bitch Magnet anticipated the emergence of what would become known as post-rock. --Mojo

CD Description

Complete anthology of seminal post-punk pioneers. Influenced dozens of bands, including BATTLES, SUPERCHUNK, DON CABALLERO, RODAN, GUIDED BY VOICES. Includes 8 rare and previously unreleased tracks, Remastered with over 50 rare photos, flyers and posters. RIYL: SLINT, MOGWAI, SHELLAC, BATTLES, JUNE OF 44, DON CABALLERO, SUPERCHUNK. Temporary Residence Ltd. is proud to present the remastered and repackaged reissue of the legendary Bitch Magnet s seminal and critically acclaimed three albums Star Booty, Umber, and Ben Hur. The deluxe 3xLP/3xCD package include all three albums, plus more than a half dozen rare and previously unreleased tracks, a total of 34 songs, remastered from the original, restored analog master tapes. Bitch Magnet was formed at Oberlin College in 1986. Immediately following the release of its debut Star Booty in 1988, the band garnered rapturous reviews and established itself among the top-tier of America s independent music underground. The band s reputation continued to grow with tours of the US and Europe, and the subsequent releases of Umber (prominently included on Mojo s list of Lost Albums You Must Own ) in 1989 and Ben Hur in 1990. The latter two have been frequently cited as a key inspiration for what would become known as post-rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bitch Magnet 17 April 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is everything Bitch Magnet recorded. A hugely influential band. Anyone thgat caught them in London or at ATP at the end of 2011 would have seen how powerful this stuff is and how it has stood the test of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential 20 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is great. Bitch Magnet's entire recorded output on 3 discs. Ben Hur has 2 extra tracks whilst Umber only has an alternate mix of 'Motor'. I can live without most of the stuff on the third disc, having never been a big fan of Star Booty. There are also some alternate early versions of Umber tracks which are supremely produced but I'd still take the album versions.
Overall though, this is a fantastic and long overdue reissue of 2 albums which are classics of their kind. Even if you own them it's worth picking this up for the remaster which has done big favors for both. Ben Hur sounds fuller whilst Umber is brighter and less muffled.
The only thing that hasn't improved is the toe-curling name. Mercifully the logo you see on the front cover is just fold over paper so this can be left by the CD player without cringing every time you walk past it. Worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like Squirrel Bait or Slint than you need this comp, 10 April 2012
By A. Woodley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I really like punk and post-punk or whatever you want to call noisy aggressive rock and roll. Bitch Magnet was an off shut of the awesome band Squirrel Bait. Previous to this release, I had looked for Bitch Magnet albums, but I was never able to find them for a decent price. I wasn't exactly sure what I was getting with this release, but I was presently surprised. The band is tight. The music is loud and aggressive. The drums crash into some pretty heavy guitar riffs. The packaging is pretty good (I'm not a huge fun of cases where you have to slip the CD into an envelope which this release is, but it does the job). There are a handful of really great bonus tracks too. If you're looking at this release, than you already know who Squirrel Bait and Slint are. If you enjoyed those bands, you will dig this band. Buy this compilation. It's prices fairly for a 3 disc set, and it won't disappoint.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great package of all 3 releases 9 Oct 2013

I consider this band one of those bands that should ha ce been bigger. I saw them at CBGB back in the 90's.They were loud and, in every way, great. I have a real affection for the drummer. That guy was great.
I like some of the previously unreleased stuff. I would say that the 2 full albums are as great as anything that came out in that era. The EP is good. But, there's no comparison to Star Booty and Umber.
