2.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended! 13 Jan. 2011

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I've had problems with this software, so I really cannot recommend it. Although it installed perfectly, after installation, I found that it attempted to block access to many of the websites I use regualarly. Add to this the way it slowed down almost every aspect of my PCs operation, coupled with constant error messages and warnings about site security, and I soon lost patience with it. Disabling the firewall and AV solved the problems, but whats the point of having this software if you have to disable it to get your PC running properly? In the end I decided to deinstall and revert back to my Norton IS package. No Internet Security package is perfect, but in my case, BitDefender fell way short of the mark. Not recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full system protection for a reasonable price 17 Feb. 2011

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have many years experience with anti-virus software packages. I removed my previous anti-virus and anti-spyware (actually one package similar to this one) and rebooted the computer. I suspect some of the negative reviews here are because others failed to do this.

For this installation, I selected the expert settings I followed the instructions and when asked if I wanted to download the latest version I clicked OK. The download was fairly quick but the installation was quite slow.

Once installed I selected a full system scan. I knew this would take a long time but I left the computer running overnight.
Since it was installed, I have monitored my machines resources. BitDefender uses no more, no less than the other market leaders.
At this price, I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Let's be clear, you are renting this service for a year, you are not buying it. It annoys me to see that in the US, BitDefender is selling 'value 2 year licences'. If you shop around, at the time of writing, you can get that for (the US dollar equivalent) of less than the 1 year package (available to us here)

It slowed down my computer and installation was convoluted. I experienced frequent freezing/crashing problems - make sure you download the most up-to-date build from their website, or UPDATE the software; that might help.Once installed, I found it to be a bloated resource hog. It interfered with PhotoShop and I experienced problems with false-positives. I've had BSOD ("Blue Screens of Death")

Note that I installed this on a new (super clean and fast) machine.

The after-sales support is not good - slow and inefficient. BitDefender really must step up their game!

The parental controls can be bypassed, if your child is computer literate he/she may be able to do this; only supervised internet usage can be recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thorough but deceleratory 5 May 2011

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I like BitDefender. I'm comfortable with it's style and happy with the GUI which you can set according to how nerdy you are (basic, intermediate, advanced) allowing you to do more fiddling with the settings the more advanced a user you are.

It is packed with useful features such as cookie control and script control. It also has a site advisor which places a handy green tick in front of your search results if it deems the site safe. However, it has produced a couple of apparently fasle negatives. There is the ubiquitous parental control, of which I have no use. Naturally there are the standard features: anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall. I should mention the BD picked up on a few thnigs that Kaspersky missed, notably a trojan. As with all anti-viruses there is the occasional heuristic false positive, but that's no different whichever software you use.

The one big problem I have with this is it's anti-spam engine. It's fine when you are dealing with emails, however I have Thunderbird set up as an RRS reader as well as an email client and when it comes to processing these feeds it seriously slows down the deletion process making it painful. I have survived without an anti-spam device for some time and, quite frankly they're not of a lot of benefit. I can spot spam just as easily without the need of some plug-in telling me it is spam. I do not with to buy viagara and I have not won the Nigerian lottery. It is easily disabled and none of the other processes slow anything down too badly.

Before I forget there is my old friend the "Scan Activity Bar" a handy little box which lets you know how active your PC is internally and how much net activity there is. I like it.

Games mode is a little worrying.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is a tough one 17 Mar. 2011

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I always find reviewing anti virus products difficult as a lot of it is down to personal experience of previous products.

For me, this left me feeling a little let down. But this is likely because I work in IT and have had exposure to a vast number of anti virus products. Maybe that's a good thing as far as a review goes!

This was my first exposure to BitDefender and I have to say it will probably be my last as well. I don't doubt its ability to protect you from internet nasties but there is a lot more to this sort of product now.

It has to be easy to use - which I don't think this is.
It needs to be quick and not drain resources - which I don't think this is.
And it needs to work as if it isn't there - which this doesn't.

The ease of use and working without intrusion are linked I feel. This software seems to need a lot of user attention to get the most out of it. In my experience with other products, the software should be able to work a lot of things out for itself. This seems to pop up asking for your action a little too often.

Also, there was a noticeable slowdonwn of the system after installing this product. This is something a lot of packages have been guilty of and is something that really should be a thing of the past now.

For protecting you online this will work and will keep you safe, but I think there are other, more streamlined and user friendly, products on the market. I would find it hard to recommend this over something like Norton or ESET.
