5.0 out of 5 stars A delight! 11 Mar 2009
Format:DVD
This wonderful and subtle comedy series is great entertainment. Special mention must be made of Nicola Pagett's delightful portrayal of a middle-class lady who starts an affair with a working-class neighbour (David Jason), but we also meet a number of other characters who react to the affair in various ways. The episodes consist of a series of local functions, often held in a pub or hotel, when all the characters meet up (sometimes inadvertently!) and the story line develops as the series progresses. Just as enjoyable today as when it first appeared on our TV screens.

Superficially, 'A Bit of a Do' is similar to 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' (or perhaps more likely, vice versa) in that we follow the characters through numerous 'acts' that are each a bit of do of one sort or another -- one 'do' per episode.

As you may imagine looking at the cast list and who wrote it, 'A Bit of a Do' isn't as syrupy (nor quite so full of beautiful people) as 'Four Weddings', but in its own earthy way, it's just as funny and altogether more moving at times -- perhaps because of (rather than despite) how prosaic it is.

Although perhaps feeling a little drawn out at times during the second series, the whole piece hangs together very well. It has a rather hammy, am-dram feel to it, but for some, that will be very much part of its charm.
