5.0 out of 5 stars The oldies are the best 10 Nov 2004
By A Customer
They don't make them like this any more. It's just an excellent film. Well made, brilliantly acted. David Niven and Cary Grant as the bishop and angel are magnificent. Loretta Young plays the bishop's wife who is feeling neglected because hubby is always so busy. Grant, the angel is sent to help out and Young begins to fall for him, and no wonder. Grant is at his most sauve in this.
Has a great Christmasy feel, Monty Wooley plays the Professor and is just great. Makes you long for the days when Christmas really meant something.
This is for those of you who have a sentimental streak and for those who don't, you will once you watch this.
I can't recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bishop's Wife (1947 B&W 21 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
When you've been running round the shops and your head is in a whirl with all the hustle and bustle leading up to Xmas, STOP... sit down and watch this film with a warm glass of mulled wine in front of the Xmas tree. At the end you will feel warm all over.
I have watched this film for years. I just love it. I adore Cary Grant anyway but him and David Niven are beautifully paired together. The wonder The Angel brings to everyone is magical. The scenes in the professor's house, the skating in the park, they just don't make films like this these days.
I would recommend everyone to watch this film leading up to Xmas, lose yourself in it and get back that Xmas feeling. WATCH IT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Essence of Christmas 8 Dec 2004
By A Customer
The most inspiring Christmas film ever, The Bishops Wife resists the overbearing sentimentality of other Christmas films and has not quite the harshness that I have found with parts of It's a Wonderful Life, its competitor for the title. Cary Grant and David Niven are perfectly cast as the Agel and the Bishop after early filming had the parts transposed. Niven who had sadly recently lost his real life wife, Primmie has all the angst of a man overburdened by work and lifes pressures. To see his prayers answered (and several of the other characters) by Grants angel is heartwarming and eye opening and gives us all a little hope. The film is perfect at Christmas but has a place at anytime of year especially for those looking for something to lift them from the ordinary in thier everyday lives. This has got to be one of the "must see" films of all time

5.0 out of 5 stars My guilty pleasure Christmas movie 14 Sep 2010
I have a touch of Grinch in my genetic make-up and I believe that a Scrooge is listed in my family tree about six generations back. I tend to go Postal after repeated exposure to "It's a Wonderful Life" and to collapse from sugar shock about halfway through "Miracle on 34th Street." But this movie gets me every time. Show me just a single scene and I'm hooked. I drop into a chair and stare in dreamy-eyed, slack-jawed wonder.

The cast is a true Hollywood Golden Age ensemble from top stars to supporting players, from Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven to Elsa Lanchester, Gladys Cooper, Monty Woolley and James Gleason: wonderful, wonderful, all of them! Then there is the magnificent photography--professionalism entwined with art to a degree seldom if ever matched today. The story is a nice little mid-20th Century parable, not entirely pointless, not too sweet and, thankfully, not too strongly insisted upon.

Previous reviewers have pointed out many good things in "The Bishop's Wife." Among its many virtues, by no means the least are that Billy Wilder was included among its writers and that Frank Capra had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the film.

I feel obliged to draw attention here to two scenes that haven't been strongly emphasized in earlier Amazon reviews:

--Mid-way through, Cary Grant as Dudley the Angel and Loretta Young as the Bishop's wife visit the basement of a down-at-the-heels church to hear a children's choir rehearse. The kids are late. One arrives and he immediately starts to sing. The others arrive one by one (with a little help from Dudley), and each begins singing until at last the whole choir is assembled. That is the best children's choir that I have ever seen or heard (and, yes, I have seen the Vienna Boys Choir.

This is a beautiful, gentle film with tons of old-fashioned Christmas spirit. Cary Grant is excellent as the angel and David Niven is perfect as the preoccupied and worried bishop. The remaining cast, especially actor playing the Professor, give equally good performances and the film never descends into schmaltz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heaven must be missing an angel 2 Mar 2012
By A Customer
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Not only my favourite Christmas movie but one of my all time favourites. Cary Grant starred in many classic movies but none where his comedy was so subtle and the sentiment so high. For me it evokes the spirit of Christmas like no other of the period and it reminds us that most of our real Christmas favourites are from this golden age of cinema, whether that is It's a wonderful life or Miracle on 34th Street. Cary as Dudley is the most suave 'angel' you could ever imagine and David Niven is brilliant as Bishop Henry Brougham, a man whose faith is being tested and his family is being neglected.
Lorreta Young is cast as the beleaguered and neglected wife and Dudley reminds her of the fun that she and Henry once shared. Their love for one another triumphs and their friendships with characters like the Professor are renewed.
The ice-skating on the pond is without a doubt a highlight along with the snowball fight. If there is a scene stealer in this film it has to be James Gleason as the cab driver Sylvester, whose character is used as a device to connect some of the film key scenes. And they all live happily ever after...don't they.
BTW avoid at all costs the Preachers Wife, starring the late Whitney Houston, a terrible remake that lacks the star quality of this unsurpassed original.
