5.0 out of 5 stars Big AND Clever!, 12 Dec 2006
From the slow burning opener, "Cerberus Is As Cerberus Does" to the smouldering final track, "The Man Who was Eaten By A Pie", this is a truly breathtaking album.

Flipron can raise a smile one minute (see "Mingers In Paradise")and goosebumps the next (see the epic "Flatpack Bride Of Possibilities").
They can also deliver killer pop tunes like "Youth Shall Never Beat Old Age In A Race" or "Dogboy Vs Monsters".

There is no point trying to describe Flipron's sound in terms of other bands or genres... They sound like Flipron; your new favourite band.

4.0 out of 5 stars How do you follow up a corker, 24 Oct 2006
By P. J. Willis (London UK) - See all my reviews

I'll admit straight out that I'm a fan of Flipron, but I'll try and give a balanced review.
This is their second album and while there may not be anything as immediately catchy as Hungamunga or as anthemic as Big Baboon (although Big and Clever comes close), it is definitely a grower. I've listened to it a lot (hence the delay in writing this review) and some of the songs, particularly "Youth Shall Never Beat Old Age in a Race" and "Flat Pack Bride of Possibilities" are simply superb.
Jesse Budd manages to pack more words into a song than most artists do in an entire record and more ideas in an album than most in their whole careers. Some of the themes explored in Fancy Blues are evident (old age and dying), but there are also totally mad moments like Dogboy vs Monsters that outshine Alex Harvey at his best.
The woozy French cabaret feel that permeated through Fancy Blues has been reduced, but their overall sound remains intact. The muscianship is superb throughout with several noises that are just unidentifiable.
There are weak moments, in particular "The Man Who WAs Eaten by a Pie" isn't up to scratch but, if you haven't heard of Flipron before, then buy this but also get Fancy Blues to see how they have progressed.

1.0 out of 5 stars unfortunately i couldn't rate it with zero stars, 3 Dec 2006
By M. K. Montgomery - See all my reviews

i bought this album after reading a short review of it in a magazine. it was described in a way that i cannot fathom that the reviewer even listened to it at all. do not buy this album unless you collect the worst albums ever made.

it has the utter stupidity of chas + dave, with the complete arrogance of rod stewart, and the bad musical choices of ub40. the singer is a cockney idiot white-man rapper who tells stupid stories about dogs.
spare yourself!
