A pair of great albums from a legend of British folk,
By A Customer
This review is from: Birthday Blues/Rosemary Lane (Audio CD)
This double offering gives you one pretty good album and one absolute classic. Birthday Blues was originally released in 1969 at a time when Jansch had already established himself as a highly inovative guitarist and songwriter. Although not one of his strongest albums it still contains some fine numbers. There is something timeless and earthy about his music which elevates it high above just about all his acoustic contempories. It really is hard to fault Rosemary Lane. Bert has recorded many albums over the years and about three or four could be classed as essential and Rosemary Lane is one. From the opening number Tell Me What is True Love? Jansch blends his soulful laid back vocals with beautiful guitar playing and heartfelt lyrics. Stand out tracks include The title number as well as Silly Women, Reynardine and Wayward Child. By sticking to what he does best, just him and an acoustic guitar, Jansch manages to evoke an atmosphere so personel he could be sat in your room playing just for you.
