This review is from: The Birth of Soul Vol.4 (Audio CD)
What was being called Soul Music in the 90s was sometimes not called that at the time. The word possibly originated from the title of a Ray Charles LP called Genius plus Soul equals Jazz.
However black music by the 60s had begun to pick up the habits of whites as they filled their music with banks of strings and the singers wrote songs pretending to be kids! Eg Sam Cooke. A lot of black music stood up as high school pop-like Jimmy Jones who emerged from a Gospel quartet. And here we have one Kenny Lynch.A black man born in London and really a Cockney who kicked off his career on EMI by covering American hits by the Drifters and Harold Dorman. In 1963 he became the first artist to cover a Lennon-McCartney song! Before that though he recorded a song called Puff (Up In Smoke)written by Giant Baum & Kaye who also wrote for Elvis and this single was issued in the States where they no doubt thought he was one of them! No one ever called Lynch a soul singer-he was simply a guy who was heard a lot on the radio and made about 4 singles a year.By 1963 he had a higher profile in the States as Johnny Tillotson had recorded a song he wrote when he fancied becoming a singer songwriter for 5 minutes! Here is also the original version of a song Bobby Darin recorded-Irresistable you
