A beautiful baby,
By
This review is from: Birth of Soul (Audio CD)
This is Vol 1 out of the three part series Birth of Soul produced by Ace/Kent. This series is interesting for everyone with a more than average interest in Soul music. As the title of the series says, it is about the Birth and not about the Predecessors of Soul. Or as Dave Godin in his excellent liner notes writes "So, if you have ever wondered about the birth of soul; when it took place, and just who was present ath the delivery, listen to this remarkable selection which so vividly shows what a bonny and lusty babe it was at that time, and how well it developed and grew!".Godin's liner notes are very good (as all Ace/Kent linernotes) by giving you well written essential and relevant information about the artistst and tracks on this CD. Not only the liner notes are very good but also the music compilation by Croasdell and Churchill is very good. It is an even balanced record with some DooWoop orientated numbers, Blues influenced ones, a few Gospel influenced ones. As this is an album about the Birth of Soul it is not really an album for the beginning soul collector, but more for those who want to know where the more matured sound of say, Motown and Stax, came from.

First of Five,

While not in chronlogical order this is simply a great series though hard at times to see the logic behind some of the songs eg Claudine Clark with Telephone Song-this was the B side of her 3rd Chancellor single.
The birth of Soul-or Uptown Soul-was defintely more interesting to what the music later became

This CD for me is a must have for any collector. I adore Bertha Tillman, 'Oh My Angel' Jan bradley Mama didn't Lie and the Impressions Gypsy Woman. All soul classics. I highly recommend this disc.

Essential,

I got to know KENT by a friend who recommended me to listen to Dave Godin's Deep soul treasures. By then my knowledge of soul was very limited, just the big names. Of course, that compilation blew me away, and after buying the other 3 volumes of Godin's sublime series I started checking out the rest of their catalogue for more stuff.
I didn't suspect then, though, that I would find so many more cds of excellent quality (all of them with great presentation and long and extremely insightful notes), just as good as Godin's series in a lot of cases, this being one of them, in this reviewer's humble opinion. 28 gems from the late 50s and early 60s by giants like Bobby Bland, Otis Redding, Etta James, Sam Cooke and many others, some not as well known, but equally brilliant. My personal favourites here are Goin'out of my head by Little Anthony and the Imperials, You're not the guy for me by Ernestine Anderson and Oh my angel, by Bertha Tillman. Kent releases are pricey, but oh boy are they worth your money! May they go on resurrecting forgotten masterpieces like these for many years to come!
