A tribute to Chicago, and to Curtis Mayfield,
By
This review is from: Birth Of Soul-Special Chicago Edition (Audio CD)
This CD is the usual excellent Kent/Ace combination of the unheard and astounding with the familiar yet evocative. Tony Rounce's selections are impeccable, Peter Burns provides his usual comprehensive and informed sleeve notes, and the sound is pristine. The CD sets out a strong case for Chicago as the home of soul, (although discerning listeners won't pass judgement until Kent have come up with the case for New York...)and the work of great team of Curtis Mayfield, Johnny pate and Carl Davies is understandably to the fore, supported by a sprinkling of tracks from Chess and other smaller labels that balance their gospel influences with a dash of the blues.
My only regret is that we don't get a CD entirely dedicated to the Master. Although Curtis often delivered the definitive versions of his own songs with the Impressions, in tracks that have been fabulously researched and presented by the same Kent Team, this CD gives tantalising examples of how his work was wonderfully interpreted by Major Lance, (two very rare tracks) Gene Chandler, (a superb stylist!) Jan Bradley (gorgeous) and Jerry Butler (check out his sublime version of 'Isle of Sirens'). So, I have a tinge of regret that we don't get rare and unreleased tracks by acts like the 5 Stairsteps, Walter Jackson, the Opals and the Fascinations in a CD dedicated to Curtis' work. I hope that one day we will get to hear them - if they exist, Kent are the team for the job! Meanwhile this is a major contribution to the World of Soul.

A fantastic edition of the 'birth of soul' series (all of which are 5 star cd's). There are so many top songs on this cd it's hard to pick out my favourites. However, tracks 14 'at the party' - wade flemons is excellent and so is track 11 'enchanted garden' by the Accents. The whole cd is full of winners and you will be if you buy it.

The last girl standin,

The attraction here for my money is a new to the U K track by Jan Bradley whose career stopped in 1968 when she became a social worker.Today with just about every one time chart maker with their own CDs-however much of a footnote they were-it seems odd that Jan Bradley is yet to be out there in her own right. And that doesn't just mean the U K its everywhere else in the world.
Whether she would be called Soul is a moot point-she had a white sound and I see her as a Pixie Girl.
