Book Description

3 Mar 2013
At the age of fourteen, Amy Wright Glenn began to question the Mormon faith of her family. She embarked on a life long personal and scholarly quest for truth. While teaching comparative religion and philosophy, Amy was drawn to the work of supporting women through labor and holding compassionate space for the dying. Amy shares moving tales of birth and death while drawing on her work as a birth doula, hospital chaplain, and her own experience of motherhood. We are born, we die, and in between these irrevocable facts of human existence the breath weaves all moments together. "Birth, Breath, and Death" entwines story, philosophy, and poetic reflection into transforming narratives that are full of grace.

Review

“Amy Glenn has a poet's heart and voice. She integrates this lyric voice into a moving memoir of life experiences: her own and those she has witnessed in her work as mother, wife, doula, teacher, and chaplain. I recommend Birth, Breath, & Death to any person who appreciates well-crafted narratives of growth and transformation, especially those professionals engaged in the work of spiritual and physical nurture.” --Tedford J. Taylor, Clinical Ethicist, Chaplain, Director of Pastoral Care & Training at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton

"I found the book a very fast read, but I also found myself re-reading, lingering, pausing to think and to settle into the peace and love that pervades every word in this little but powerful book...She probably doesn't begin to consider herself A Teacher, but I would gladly sit at her feet and just soak up her inborn and learned wisdom." -- Peggy Vincent Author of Baby Catcher

5.0 out of 5 stars I devoured this beautiful book in one night 13 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I devoured this beautiful book in one night! It has a magic quality to it and I felt that I was in the presence of someone very, very special. Amy Wright Glenn displays such gentle goodness and her patience and kindness just radiates out from the page. There are some superb quotes and musings and it is a book that I would recommend unreservedly to anyone who wants inspiration or who works supporting others. It made me wonder about the way I work as a doula but infact I have taken her lead and learned to just be rather than do.

An absolute delight
