Book Description

6 Jun 2002
Written by one of the world's leading obstetricians, this extraordinary book takes a totally fresh look at what parenting means in the 21st century. Addressing both parents, the book looks at all aspects of life, through the nine months of pregnancy and the following nine of the baby's life. It is both a practical handbook for pregnancy, birth and the early months of a new baby's life, and a stimulating exploration of this period of enormous transition. Taking a holistic approach, it advocates integrated health care, i.e. both conventional and complementary therapies, and, with its exhaustive medical content, including a 160- page A-Z section, also acts as a superb source of reference. Review

"the very best book on the subject" (Independent 20020930)

"A wonderful book for any mother-to-be, filled with beautiful photography and sound advice... Packed with information, it explores both conventional and complimentary approaches to pregnancy, birth and baby care. Best of all, the tome is neither dictatorial nor patronising, allowing you to make your own choices." (Junior 20030122)

"If there is such a thing as a good birth guide, this is the one. The modern, fresh approach and indispensible advice...(Gordon's) marriage of conventional medicine and less traditional methods will please every parent and parent-to-be. Paediatrics, midwifery, nutrition and exercise all meet in the only book that the would-be parent will ever need" (Pride Magazine 20030402)

"an excellent, easy-to-read and thoughtful book" (Baby & you 20030516)

"the definitive guide to pregnancy, birth preparation, your newborn, toddler and family. There's nothing this book doesn't cover. It is an essential reference guide for your bookshelf - so don't journey through the bewilderment of parenthood alone, when this book will hold your hand" (Maternity 20030610)

Book Description

A groundbreaking book on childrearing which will do for the 21st century what Dr Spock and Dr Penny Leach did for the latter part of the 20th century (20000915)

5.0 out of 5 stars Two good books in one great volume 3 Oct 2002
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book in a panic after my wife developed mastitis - it had coincidentally been highly recommended in a UK newspaper the previous week. Immediately it is a reassuring read, both in it's size and in the way it is written.

There are effectively two books in one:
- The first section is a chronological journey through pregnancy and the nine months following the birth. The tone is very positive and down-to-earth and pleasingly approaches parenting as a joint effort - many books and magazines tend to make the father feel neglected. As well as frequently referring to the baby's own viewpoint, there are also several practical tips on development and upbringing. The overall message is that there are no rules and "correct" methods - just useful advice to absorb and apply in your own way.
- The second section is a large reference section covering health issues, etc. in great detail. This can be dipped into as and when necessary and as in the first section, is written in an easy-to-understand style but with additional medical explanations. There are a variety of remedies described for each ailment including non-conventional medicine, which is typical of the book's open-mindedness.

With so many parenting books available and so many other baby items eating up my salary, it's difficult to know what is worth spending money on but without doubt, "Birth and Beyond" is excellent value if only for the peace of mind and self-confidence it instills in us as new parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book with soul 1 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Yehudi Gordon's exemplary tome combines enough facts, figures, charts and glossaries to satisfy any medical student. But it is also filled with something infinitely more precious to the prospective parent. It has a truly personal touch.

From chapters on becoming to family, to sections on relationships, communicating, and tools for meditation - this is a wonderful and inspiring read. Going beyond pregnancy, it deals with the learning curve of becoming a parent, your baby's emotions and much more. The book's quietly spiritual dimension lift it beyond the realm of the usual baby books. It certainly surpassed all the (many) other books we invested in when expecting our first child. They seemed basic and boring by comparison.

If you buy one pregnancy and baby book - make it this one. It has all the makings of a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only pregnancy book you need. 23 Nov 2002
Format:Hardcover
Have bought two other books in the past. They both left us wanting more. This book covers everything from conception, to your body, development, birth and the first year. All in an easy to read format that is filled with inspiring pictures and thoughts.
Extremely comprehensive book. It covers almost all areas and gives reasons and explanations for everything. It has helped us feel more in control of the pregnancy and has an extensive chapter on complementary therapies that can be carried out ourselves. A-Z section at the back is superb.
A must buy book!!
