Product Description

Product Description

Take a fascinating and nostalgic visual journey back to 1960s Birmingham to witness the much-loved Bull Ring, the grand city-centre buildings that were demolished to make way for the 'modern' city and the streets and courts that were swept away during the last fifty years of development. Mark Norton, author of Birmingham Past & Present: In My Father's Footsteps, presents many previously unpublished pictures alongside his own colour photographs of the area in the twenty-first century. Thoughtful and detailed captions provide a new insight into the ever-changing city.

A brilliant follow-up to Birmingham Past and Present: In My Father's Footsteps and with mostly colour photographs. It will either bring back memories or provide a fascinating view of what the city used to be like before you remember it. Or a bit of both as in my case. It is sometimes sad to see what has been demolished, or in the case of the 1960s concrete Bull Ring quite delightful to see what has been demolished! I bought three copies, one for myself and two for gifts along with Mark's first book which I already owned. I knew how much I'd enjoy it but was also confident of how it would be appreciated as a gift. Whether the recipient picks it up for ten minutes and flicks through the pictures every now and then or puts aside a couple of hours to soak up the atmosphere and read the well-written research and observations about each scene it will definitely prove interesting.

I bought this for my Dad who is a 'Blue nose' through and through. It really was a trip down Memory Lane for him, he couldn't believe how the city had changed, sometimes not for the better. It is tragic the amount of Victorian buildings that were knocked down to make way for concrete blocks. All in all this filled my Father with mixed emotions but he loves the book.
